Accident Details and Circumstances
The accident happened at around 2:19 PM at the junction of Ayer Rajah Avenue and North Buona Vista Road on 1 Apr 2024.
After the incident, several members of the public rushed forward to check on the injured students and provide assistance before emergency services arrived.
The accused, a 55-year-old Indian national who was working as a tipper truck driver at the time, faced two charges under the Road Traffic Act.
Court documents showed that the accused was planning to drive the tipper truck to a construction site at Singapore Public Service College.
He was driving along Ayer Rajah Avenue and intended to make a right turn into North Buona Vista Road.
After the traffic light turned green, the accused slowly moved forward with his tipper truck.
He waited until there were no vehicles from the opposite direction and for pedestrians to cross North Buona Vista Road before making his right turn.
However, he failed to notice the two students who were still in the process of crossing the road, resulting in the collision.

Severe Injuries and Long-term Consequences
A 13-year-old Secondary 1 student was crossing the road with her female classmate, intending to return to school for an extra-curricular activity.
Just as they were about to finish crossing, both were hit by the tipper truck and hospitalized.
The incident occurred during school hours when many students would typically be moving between activities.
According to previous reports, the two injured female students attended the nearby Fairfield Methodist School (Secondary).
The 13-year-old student suffered serious injuries with six fractures to her left foot. Between 1 Apr and 8 May 2024, she underwent a total of six surgeries and was given 67 days of medical leave.

Medical reports showed that her left foot has limited range of motion and she experiences pain when walking. Doctors believe this condition may be permanent.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
After reviewing all evidence and hearing arguments from both prosecution and defense, the judge determined that the incident warranted a substantial penalty.
The accused’s guilty plea was taken into consideration during sentencing.
The accused was sentenced to six months in jail and had all classes of his driving license suspended for five years.
