Unlimited Mobile Data No More: MyRepublic Lost to be Fourth Telco

Remember how excited we were when MyRepublic openly stated that they wanted to bring unlimited mobile data plan to us, potentially disrupting the mobile data industry?

Well, hold your horses, because that might not occur. At least not in the near future.

The only two companies in the race to be the fourth telco is MyRepublic and TPG Telecom, as the other candidates did not qualify to do so.

According to media reports, TPG Telecom has won the right to be Singapore’s fourth telco. It made the winning bid of $105 million for 60HMz of airwaves. I know you don’t know what that is, so let’s just say that they can be the fourth telco.

TPG Telecom Limited is an Australian listed company, being the second largest internet service provider in Australia. It’s officially formed in 2009, after the merger of two companies, Total Peripherals Group and SP Telemedia. And the most interesting part? The CEO is a Malaysia-born Australian, and is also the 11th richest person in Australia.

The company was only revealed to be a candidate late this year, going head-to-head with MyRepublic.

MyRepublic bid with $102.5 million, short of the highest bid by $2.5 million. According to its outspoken CEO Malcolm Rodrigues, “Bidding $105 million and beyond simply did not support our vision and business case for mobility in Singapore.”

So, what does this mean for us?

For a start, it will take 18 months for them to provide coverage on the street, and 54 months to provide coverage in MRT underground stations and lines. That means it’s another two more years before we could see the TPG Telecom logo on our phone.

And it also means that unlimited mobile data could be a mere fantasy now. But let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Oh, just for your info, a TPG mobile plan in Australia is 10GB data with unlimited calls and SMS at $39.90 (AUD and SGD are almost similar now). #justsaying
