Upper Thomson’s Biscuit King to Close on 31 January 2027 After More Than 40 Years in Business

Biscuit King, the Upper Thomson shop that sells iced gem biscuits, butterfly crackers and lemon puffs, will close on 31 January 2027.

The shop put up a handwritten notice at its outlet at 130 Casuarina Road, giving customers its last day and thanking them for their support. A photo of the notice circulated on Saturday (7 November), and The Straits Times reported the closure the following day.

Rising Costs and the Prospect of Higher Rent

Owner Benny Ong told The Straits Times that biscuit prices had risen over the years, with another increase recently, AsiaOne reported on 8 November.

Ong said his supplier expected the cost of plastic bags and containers to rise by more than 30 per cent in 2026. He also pointed to the possibility of higher rent as the landlord was selling the property. Ong said he had no plans to move the shop or take the business online.

From Provision Shop to Old-School Snack Shop

The business began in 1982 as Chua Seng Minimart, a provision shop. Its shelves now carry traditional sweets and snacks as well as old-school games such as Old Maid and pick-up sticks.

The Casuarina Road outlet lists its opening hours as 11am to 10pm from Tuesday to Sunday. Biscuit King’s website directs customers to the shop and says it has temporarily suspended orders due to a shortage of staff.
