Well, Jurong is no more a sleepy fishing village or a place “dotted with factories”!
(P.S. It isn’t, anyways)
The Jurong Lake District is on its way to creating more jobs and new homes in a car-lite town of the future.
This was made known to the public on 25 August by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).
They have made plans to transform the industrial town into Singapore’s second Central Business District (CBD), an extremely zealous ambition first announced in 2008.
Singapore is indeed undertaking a new phase of infrastructure development in the coming decade. Are you excited?
How are more jobs and homes created?
Firstly, they will be tapping on the district’s proximity to the upcoming High Speed Rail terminus and Tuas mega-port to create 100K new jobs, especially in the sectors of maritime, infrastructure and technology.
Yay, more jobs for us. #sensemysarcasm
Secondly, there are plans to build 20K new homes and develop more parks and waterways. The new CBD will also be a car-lite town with energy-friendly infrastructure.
According to the Government, they are “not just building another ordinary district” with the Jurong Lake District. Instead, they are building a superhero district.
Sorry, I got carried away, they are aiming to “create a better, smarter and more sustainable business centre” which in turn will provide “more jobs and opportunities for Singaporeans”.
But plans for the Jurong Lake District are expected to be fulfilled only in 2040 and beyond.
I don’t know if I’ll still be around by then. Life is too short.
As for the design of the district, there are plans to allocate a “significant amount” of road space to public transport, also giving more space to pedestrians, cyclists and personal mobility device users.
Their goal is to encourage commuters to use public transport for 8 out of 10 trips in the district. This is believed to be the highest target ever set. #veryambitiousindeed
Dear Westies, if you’re keen to uncover more of this highly promising idea, the draft masterplan is exhibited at the URA Centre Atrium in Maxwell Road until 31 August, and at Westgate Mall in Jurong East from 8 to 17 September. Free admission!
