Dogs are cute. Baby Koalas are even cuter.
But combine them together, and you get an extremely adorable duo that takes the internet by storm.
A Koala joey one day decided to hitch a ride on a man’s pet dog.
It is believed that the poor marsupial mistook the dog for its parent, and clung onto it.
Clearly, the dog was not impressed by how cute the little creature was, and proceeded to shake it off.
The little Koala then clung on even tighter with its tiny paws, refusing to let go, hugging what it thought was its mother.
Eventually, the little koala climbed back up into the trees safely, returning to his home and habitat.
However, other koalas do not have that luxury.
Loss Of Habitat
The reason why Koala sightings have become so common is simple – a significant loss of habitat.
Much of its original living habitat has been eaten up by urban development. Up to 80% of their original habitat in Australia has disappeared.
What remains of the koalas is splintered and vulnerable, trapped in tiny parcels of land.
Many of them become vulnerable to dog attacks and motor vehicles, as urbanisation creeps up closer and closer to them.
The common wildfires in Australia do not make things any better. They swiftly decimate forests and koala populations, burning through whatever remaining habitat exists.
Many of them have their faces, hands and feet burnt as they escape to the top of trees. Even more koalas succumb to the smoke and perish.
For the lucky few that survive, they eventually perish too, as their food sources do not recover in time.
As a result, local extinctions of koalas take place.
We need to start taking better care of our environment, or else these endearing creatures would cease to exist.
