Do you know that Netflix is struggling?

Over in the US, media companies that own the rights to popular shows and movies are starting their own streaming services, because why let Netflix earn when they’re the one producing the shows?

Case in point: The Walt Disney Studios. The US firm studio owns rights to popular shows like the Marvel movies, Star Wars and of course their iconic characters like Mickey Mouse. They’re going to launch Disney+, their own streaming services, on 12 November 2019, and you can bet that Netflix is sweating.

In fact, most major studios have their own streaming services now, so Netflix, the disruptor of TV, has been disrupted.

But the streaming giant isn’t just competing with studios; they’re also competing with other stand-alone streaming services like Amazon Prime TV.

And today, they’ve one new competitor: Apple TV+.

Apple TV+

When Apple TV+, a video streaming service, was first announced, Singaporeans were like, “Oh, confirm won’t launch in a small market like Singapore lah.”

We were wrong; two months back, during the announcement of iPhone 11, it was announced that Singapore is one of the countries that’ll have Apple TV+.

And to add icing to the cake, anyone who has purchased an Apple device (iPhone or iPad) after 10 September 2019 will receive a year’s worth of subscription for free.

Each month’s subscription is at S$6.98, which is much cheaper than Netflix’s S$10.98.

In other words, new Apple device users got over $83 worth of free subscription.

If you have a new apple device with the latest firmware, the Apple TV+ app should already be in your phone, so you can simply watch it for free now until next year November.

If not, you can subscribe to it.

Now, what if you’re not an Apple user?

Non-Apple User

For some reason, there’s no Apple TV+ app for Android…yet.

So if you want to watch it on your Samsung phone, you’d have to use your browser.

The question now is: With Netflix, HBO Go, Amazon Prime TV and even Toggle Prime all in Singapore…is this new streaming service worth the extra bill?

Lots of Original Content

Apple plans on spending a total of USD$4.2 billion from now until 2022 on original programmes, which makes sense since they won’t want to be held hostage by other studios.

However, unlike Netflix or other streaming services we’re familiar with, whereby there were already a ton of contents available in the platform since they launched them earlier in the US, Apple TV+ is launched worldwide with Singapore, so the number of shows are pretty limited.

Only a few shows are available, though Apple intends to have new original content every month.

Here’s the list:

  • Dickinson
  • For All Mankind
  • Ghostwriter
  • Helpsters
  • The Morning Show
  • Oprah’s Book Club
  • See
  • Snoopy in Space

But if you’re one who’ll like to watch movies you’ve missed, you’d be better off with Netflix, HBO Go or Amazon Prime TV.

If you want new contents because you’ve practically watched everything on Netflix and HDO Go (do you even have a life?), then this might be for you.

I sure am, but most probably would stick with Netflix until Apple TV+ has more shows.
