Singapore used to be a place filled with exciting events. However, when COVID-19 struck us like a wrecking ball, all the events were struck off the table as well.
Thanks to technology and its advancements, we are able to attend these events once again... at least virtually.
There’s a Virtual Teochew Festival Ongoing Now & You Can Buy Hawker Food, Too
Organised by the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan and music and drama association Nam Hwa Opera, this year\s Teochew festival is a little different.
Before COVID-19, the Teochew festival was held offline in locations like Ngee Ann City or Marina Bay Sands. This time, they are bringing everything online.
Held from 5 to 14 Nov, this year’s Teochew festival will be held online at an interactive village. The theme for this year’s festival is “Passing On The Heritage”.
With this festival, they hope to be able to promote inter-ethnic understanding, strengthen cohesion among Singaporeans and pass on the Chinese culture to the younger generations.
Despite the growing number of bananas in the community, Teochews are actually the second largest sub-group of Chinese Singaporeans here. Thus, the large festival.
In this year’s virtual festival, there will be operas, hawkers for you to purchase your Teochew dishes from and even a beauty pageant.
In total, there are 12 virtual zones and over 100 hours of entertainment for you to browse through.
12 Virtual Zones
The 12 virtual zones in the village that you can explore are:
- Nam Hwa Opera
- Art Collections
- Shopping Street
- Art & Crafts
- Culture & Traditions
- Local Clan Associations
- Language Learning
- Union Central Stage
- Food Street
- Miss Teochew Beauty Pageant
- Virtual Tours
- ChaoShan China Pavilion
When you first enter the virtual village, you will be led through the entire festival. Just like a walking tour without the walking part.
Thereafter, you are free to do whatever you want.
Although you are unable to throw banana peels on the virtual stage, you are able to watch the live streams of the different programmes on their online Union Central Stage.
There are also playbacks for those who missed it and various zoom webinars for you to participate in.
Food & 2021 Miss Teochew Beauty Pageant
What’s a festival without food?
Although this festival is held online, you are still able to purchase your beloved Teochew dishes. There are over 15 Teochew hawkers on board from Kueh Ho Jiak to Ah Mah Chew Kueh.
You are also able to vote for who you think should be the winner of the 2021 Miss Teochew Beauty Pageant. This year, there are 18 contestants for you to choose from. Registered visitors are able to vote twice a day.
The virtual festival is open to all Singaporeans regardless of age and ethnicity. Or should I say, anyone with an internet connection.
You can access the festival here.
