Down on luck?

You can borrow a red packet from the Goddess of Mercy, Guan Yin, at Waterloo Street Temple this year for good fortune. Here’s how.

Goddess of Mercy’s Open Treasury Day

For those wondering why borrowing a red packet will give you luck, this is part of an activity called “Open Treasury Day”.

On the 26th day of the first lunar month, the Goddess of Mercy is said to open her treasury to help everyone. By borrowing a red packet with a small coin inside from her, you’ll be blessed for the year. It looks something like this:

Many people keep the red packet inside their wallets, so that good luck will follow them throughout the year.

Those who borrow a red packet would have to return it next year before being able to borrow another one.

Waterloo Street Temple Resumes Red Packet Borrowing From 16 February

The temple has announced that worshippers may borrow the red packets from 16 February onwards, while stocks last.

However, worshippers will still have to follow odd-even entry restrictions to enter the temple, based on the last digit of their NRIC or Work Permit number.

Odd numbers can enter on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Even numbers will be able to enter on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The temple will be closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Additionally, only 50 people are allowed in the temple at any time, and the temple will also be closed for cleaning from 12:30pm to 1pm every day.
