Do you remember back in the second half of 2014 there was a swarm of bees which formed a curtain outside a Serangoon Central flat?

The picture itself made most of our hair stand. Although it’s not common in Singapore, there’s no harm in knowing what to do and what not to do when you encounter such situations.

The Dos

  1. Cover your face and run as quickly and as far as your legs can take you. Bees generally don’t fly very fast and hence it is easy to outrun a bee.
  2. Run against the wind. This way it’s difficult for a bee to chase you.
  3. Run in a straight line. If you zigzag around the people around you may get stung. Don’t be an a-hole and drag people down with you please.
  4. Look for a shelter and run inside. Bees are unlikely to follow you indoors. Those that do will be disoriented due to the change in the light and temperature, and will instinctively fly towards the windows.
  5. Make use of any coverage you are able to find; such as blankets or car.

The Don’ts

  1. Swing your arms around in hope of chasing the bee away. Here’s the bad news: bees are attracted to movement, so moving vigorously will just attract them to you even more.
  2. Jump into water. Just like in the cartoons, the bees will wait for you to resurface.

Contact a pest control ASAP when there is a bee infestation. A typical bee’s sting is usually not fatal but they can be life-threatening to people who are allergic to the venom. Seek medical attention immediately if you are attacked by the bees. Better safe than sorry!
