Remember Thaddeus Ross, the general from many Marvel movies?
Actor William Hurt, who played many iconic roles and won an Oscar, has sadly passed away at the age of 71.
Built Reputation as Actor Unafraid To Play Unusual Characters
Hurt’s first role in a film was as an obsessed scientist in Ken Russell’s 1980 film Altered States.
Since then, he has built a reputation as an actor who was always willing to play unconventional characters. These include a Russian police officer in 1983’s Gorky Park, to a man who wants to build a machine to help blind people in 1991’s Until the End of the World.
His popularity shot up when he appeared with Kathleen Turner in the 1981 film Body Heat. He has also been nominated for Oscars for various roles, as a teacher of deaf students in Children of a Lesser God in 1986, and as a television anchorman in 1987’s Broadcast News.
Most notably, he won an Oscar for best actor in 1985 for his portrayal of a gay prisoner in Kiss of the Spider Woman.
He also won another Academy Award for his role as a Philadelphia mobster in A History of Violence. Interestingly, he appears in the film only for 10 minutes, but was the star of the show. Many critics praised his portrayal of the character, for balancing creepy and funny.
If he only appeared for 10 minutes but is the star of the show, there’s no doubt that he was truly a legendary actor.
But he didn’t just act in old films. In recent years, Hurt has been popular amongst the younger crowd too through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He acted as Thaddeus Ross, the blustering general who witnessed Bruce Banner turn into the Hulk.
Hurt has since appeared in five Marvel films: The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, as well as Black Widow.

A Hollywood-Like Personal Life?
Hurt was born 20 March 1950 in Washington DC. However, as he was the son of a US diplomat, Hurt travelled lots as a child.
Despite being a legendary actor, Hurt didn’t like being in the limelight. Instead of building a home in Hollywood as many actors do, he ended up settling down in Oregon.
In interviews, he revealed that he’s not comfortable with Hollywood life. However, his personal life has still been the subject of interest of fans and paparazzi alike.

He was also sued by a former lover, the ballet dancer Sandra Jennings, in late 1980s, and was previously in a relationship with French actress Sandrine Bonnaire.
Apart from his tumultuous love life, Hurt also spoke fluent French, and liked to be a private pilot too.
Hurt is remembered by three sons and one daughter.
