Man Resprayed His Car from Blue to Yellow After Footage of Car Racing in KPE Went Viral

A man resprayed his car from blue to yellow to evade the police… but he wasn’t even the one who was racing in the viral video.

Here’s what happened.

Wife Drove Car, Caught Racing in Footage

A blue Nissan GTR was one of the eleven cars caught racing along the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) on 16 May 2020.

The footage was captured by an in-car camera of another vehicle and uploaded onto Facebook, where it went viral.

Tan Choon Hwee, upon seeing the footage, realised that his wife Li Xue Ping had driven the blue car which was caught on camera. Li was driving the car way above the speed limit of 80km at about 1am.

Realising that they’ll get caught by the police, he then took the car to his paint shop, Spray Paint Shop in Ubi, to have it resprayed in yellow on 18 May 2020.

And by the way, the car isn’t even his. The Nissan GTR is owned by Tan’s sister, but he paid 25% of the car’s price and now drives the car with his wife.

So yes, he went through all of this trouble to cover up a crime he didn’t commit, for a car that wasn’t his.

Lied to Police About Car

When the police showed up on the night of 18 May after receiving news that the blue car was spotted there, they saw the now yellow Nissan in the spray oven. The spoiler and vehicle licence plate were removed.

Tan told the police that the car belonged to a customer, and that it had been in the shop for several days. Basically saying that the car could not have been involved in the race lah.

Tan’s lies delayed the police’s tracking by two days. On 21 May, Li ended up driving the car to the Traffic Police Headquarters, presumably to turn herself in.

Jailed for One Week

On 11 March 2022, Tan pleaded guilty to intentionally misleading the police. He’s been sentenced to one week of jail.

Another charge of obstructing the course of justice was taken into consideration for the sentencing. As for his wife, the court documents did not give any details on whether she or the other drivers have been charged.

For lying to the police, Tan could have been jailed for two years and been fined.
