You may have a single friend or two who constantly jokes about being the single “cat person” who owns a bunch of cats in their old age instead of finding love in another human being.
One middle-aged woman may have lived out this dream. She allegedly housed over 40 cats in an HDB flat.
However, she did not take care of the cats properly, and the stench affected the neighbours.
The good thing is that the cats were found in acceptable states and were not mistreated or starved.
Here is what happened.
Woman Housed Over 40 Cats in AMK HDB Flat
A woman who lived in Ang Mo Kio was found to have housed over 40 cats in the HDB flat. The block in question was Block 323 at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.
According to a neighbour who spoke to Zaobao but did not wish to be named, the woman started to raise cats over three years ago.
At first, the woman only raised a few cats. But the number of cats in the house increased steadily over the years before hitting the 40-cat mark.
The neighbour also reveals that the woman and her husband moved away about a year and a half ago, leaving the cats alone.
Thankfully, they would occasionally return to the HDB flat to feed and clean up after the cats.
The neighbour also shared that the cats often fought with each other and would “make noise” while fighting.
Some of the cats would also run out from the HDB flat.
The smaller cats, in particular, liked to escape through the gaps in the windows and the doors, loitering around the corridors.
Some residents in the area were also worried that the cats would hurt the children in the area by scratching them.
But what irked the neighbours the most was the stench emitting from the flat. People who walked past the HDB flat could smell the excretion of the animals.
The stench would also waft to neighbouring flats, forcing the neighbours to shut their windows tightly.
The Cats Were Not Mistreated and Were in an Acceptable State
The good thing, however, is that when the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) investigated the flat, the cats were found in good condition.
According to a statement put out jointly by the AVS and HDB, the investigations found the cats healthy, and the owners were also contacted to ensure that they would continue to feed and house the cats.
As of now, the case is still being monitored by the authorities.
