“Always beware of insurance agents,” my mum used to tell me. “They are evil. Oh yes they are.”
“How so?” I asked while sucking on my lollipop.
Her expression darkened. “Take heed son; they are unbelievably attractive and charismatic individuals with the gift of the gab.”
“Isn’t that a positive thing though?” I pondered.
And my mum will tap on my head lightly. “Positive for them, not so for us. It’s precisely because of that set of skills that makes them so… scary.”
Growing up, I soon learnt that my mum was… occasionally right.
But it wasn’t until this case that I truly re-evaluated her words:
A single mum has claimed that “an insurance agent charmed her into having sex and lending him money after proposing to her at their first date.”
What happened?
The woman, Ms Liu, told Shin Min Daily News that she had gotten acquainted with the man through an app, and the two met up after a month of chatting.
“On our first date, he took out a ring and proposed to me, saying that I was ‘the one’,” she said.
“I was flattered and shocked.”
Ms Liu stated that the man later explained how he had initially wanted to propose to his ex-girlfriend with the aforementioned ring, but unexpected circumstances led to the couple’s split.
Ever since then, he has kept the ring by his side.
“He told me that he would design a new ring for me to show me his sincerity, so I did not take the ring.”
But that was when everything changed.
When the pair met up for the third time in July, the man told Ms Liu that he had forfeited all his clients’ money in a bad investment, and was left with no choice but to ask for a loan of $1,700 from her.
“He promised to return the money in four days and refused to write an IOU,” Ms Liu said.
“When it was time for him to pay up, he repeatedly delayed and came up with all sorts of excuses.
“Then he became uncontactable.”
According to Ms Liu, four months have passed and she hasn’t gotten back a single cent.
She subsequently lodged a police report on 30 Aug, 2017.
When queried by the media, a police spokesman confirmed the incident.
His side of the story
When reporters got in touch with the man, he denied the allegations and claimed that “Ms Liu had attempted to seduce him instead.”
The man, who did not wish to have his identity disclosed, insisted that he had not borrowed any money from Miss Liu.
On the contrary, he said that he had loaned her more than $2,000, of which she had used to buy furniture and items.
“I am financially stable, and I just bought a car, which I paid for in entirety,” he said.
“My monthly salary is more than $10,000, so I wouldn’t need to borrow money.”
He also declined allegations that he had proposed to Ms Liu, or seduced her.
“It was her who was trying to seduce me from the start.”
“She has cheated a lot of men before me too, and I definitely wasn’t interested in her.”
The man said that he has taken legal actions, but so far there’s no evidence of a police report being made.
Who’s right?
I guess we’ll have to wait for police investigations to conclude before we know the truth.
Until then, we can only speculate, huh?
