Craving a bite while watching the World Cup matches?

Perhaps you want to watch the live matches at a sports bar to soak in the atmosphere, but your bank account doesn’t permit you to.

Fret not – the National Library’s got your back, at least for the final and third-place playoff of the FIFA World Cup.

Here’s what you need to know.

Live Screening of the Final and Third-Place Playoff

We’ve all been to the National Library Building before, be it for the last-minute content cramming before an important examination or simply to look at the variety of resources there.

This time, however, we’ll be heading to the National Library for another reason – to gather together and watch the World Cup.

The National Library will be screening the final and third-place playoffs at the Plaza on 17 and 18 Dec.

Catching the World Cup at the National Library Building

The Plaza on level one of the 16-storey library will be converted into a “football pitch” in preparation for the live screening of the final and third-place playoff of the World Cup.

There’s no need to break the bank to watch the matches at sports bars like The Drunken Poet now.

The Plaza will be able to accommodate up to 500 people, so get ready to reach the Plaza early to chope a good spot.

Regardless, please stay safe so it won’t eventuate in an unfortunate stampede.

The “pitch” will be created using green cushioned vinyl flooring, so rest assured that you, your friends and your family can watch the matches comfortably.

Can’t see past 3m ahead of you? The National Library’s got that covered as well.

The matches will be shown on a 300-inch screen, so you’ll definitely be able to catch the highs and lows of the games even without front-row seats.

And the best part of all this? It’s free.

There will be beverages available at the Plaza as well.

Celebrating Local Football

The Plaza will be opening at 8 pm ahead of the final and third-place playoffs, both of which kick off at 11 pm Singapore time.

If you’re going to be there early, there’s a whole line-up of activities for you to indulge in.

Before kick-off, a video on the history of football will be screened, so fans can appreciate the roots of a sport they hold so dearly.

The video was produced using materials from; you guessed it—the National Library Board’s (NLB) very own collection.

The video also features the recently published book “Roar: Football Legends of Singapore”, so if you haven’t already heard of it, this is your opportunity to get to know what it’s about.
