The Worker’s Party (WP) MP Faisal Manap, who had been serving in the role of the vice-chairman of the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) since 2016, has stepped down as of 31 July this year.
He will be succeeded by the current Aljunied GRC MP Leon Perera, according to a series of Government Gazette notices published on Monday (15 August).
According to the town council, the move was directed at giving all MPs greater exposure in leadership roles, and that the decision was “part of a rotation exercise among MPs to facilitate deepening of leadership capacity”, according to a spokesperson who spoke with The Straits Times.
The current MP representing the Aljunied GRC, Gerald Giam was reappointed into his role as vice-chairman, following his appointment into the post since last year.
Changes Come Amid Further Investigations of WP’s Lying Scandal
With Mr Faisal and the WP chief and Leader of the Opposition, Pritam Singh still currently involved in ongoing investigations regarding their roles in the lying scandal.
Sparing you of the details here, apparently the two had “guided” Raessah Khan to follow through with a lie she told in court.

This resultantly led to some uncertainty over Mr Faisal’s future.
Both Minister Faisal and Minister Singh risk losing their seats in parliament if they are charged in the end, and they will also be convicted and fined a minimum sum of $10,000.
Mr Faisal also oversees much of the Kaki Bukit division of the GRC he manages, and has held the vice-chair position of the town council since April 2021.
After succeeding MP Dennis Tan, he was also appointed as the Hougang town council chairman, where he served in the role from September 2018 to April 2021.
Who is MP Leon Perera?
As fellow member of the Workers’ Party, Mr Perera has been the MP representing the Serangoon division of Aljunied GRC since 2020. He was previously a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament between the years of 2015 and 2020.
Mr Perera had joined the five-member Workers’ Party team contesting in Aljunied GRC during the 2020 general election, with the party winning a 59.95% of the vote, so Perera became an elected MP representing the Serangoon ward of Aljunied GRC in the 14th Parliament.
During his maiden speech as an elected MP, he called for social safety nets to be strengthened, widened, and made easier to access, and also called for the need to respect the role of a civil society, urging the government to be less resistant to the increasingly plural political landscape. He also highlighted that greater support needed to be shown towards entrepreneurs.
Along with fellow Sengkang MP He Ting Ru, they jointly raised a motion aimed at combatting gender equality, where he called on the House to affirm that “gender equality requires a whole of society effort to remove all barriers, in order to empower every woman to freely realise her full potential and participation in society.”
Notably, he also filed two adjournment motions.
One was for a hawker policy reform, where he called for lower rent prices for hawkers, as well as a “Hawker’s Academy” to train the next generation of hawkers, in efforts to preserve and promote Singapore’s hawker culture and heritage.
The other adjournment motion raised was in response to Singapore’s poor track record on chronic diseases like diabetes. In the preventive health reform, he called on the Government to adopt a highly-targeted, outcome-based approach with regular reviews.
In January last year, Perera was announced as the Media Team Head of the Worker’s Party.
He is also the Town Councillor of Finance and Investment Committee and a member of the Estate and Liaison Committee in the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council.
