NUS has been in the news a lot recently, and it’s for all the wrong reasons.
They have been involved in quite a number of sexual misconduct cases in the past few months, and here’s another one.
What a surprise.
On 1 October 2019, a student from Yale-NUS college, Brandon Lee Bing Xiang, was charged in court for taking upskirt and shower videos of at least four women in his college.
The 26-year-old faces a total of 24 charges of intruding on a woman’s privacy to insult her modesty. Three of these were for filming upskirt videos, and 21 for shower videos.
There are SO many hobbies out there for one to do in their free time but this is what he chose.
Suspended Right After The College Found Out
A statement was issued by Joanne Roberts, the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at Yale-NUS College, on 3 October 2019, where she addressed Lee’s actions.
“Brandon Lee Bing Xiang, a student at Yale-NUS College, has been charged in court for insulting the modesty of a fellow student. He was suspended the day after the College was notified about the incident in March 2019,” she said.
She also said that they had reached out to the affected female student to provide her with the necessary support.
The college declined to comment any further on the case.
Lee’s offences took place between August 2017 and 3 March 2019.
He Was A National Youth Bowler
Lee was a student in the graduating class of 2020, and he was also a student council president from 2017 to 2018.
I don’t know how he could have possibly deserved that title.
According to Shin Min Daily News, Lee was also a national youth bowler, who represented Singapore in the 2009 Asian Youth Games.
A newsletter from Singapore Sports School also revealed that he had graduated from Republic Polytechnic-Singapore Sports School with a Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management in 2014, with a GPA of 3.94.
“Brandon Lee Bing Xiang, who graduated with a 3.94 GPA, has accepted the Yale-NUS Dean’s Scholarship (Philosophy, Politics and Economics), to start his tertiary education in 2016 after completing National Service. He had competed at the Singapore 2009 Asian Youth Games and won a silver and a bronze in bowling events,” the newsletter reads.
I wonder if this means he’ll get away easily with what he did. You know, since he has a good GPA and the “potential to exceed in life”.
In case you’re not aware, another student from NUS recently made headlines for molesting a woman at an MRT station, and he also admitted to committing similar acts in the past.
However, he was let off with probation because of his good academic results and the “potential to excel in life”.
Lee will be back in court on 22 Oct 2019 for further mention of the case, so I guess we’ll find out his penalty then.
If found guilty, he could be jailed up to a year, fined, or both for each charge.
