Yishun HDB Flat Tiles Popped Out & So Did Our Office Lobby Tiles

If you thought that the series of unfortunate events taking place in Yishun has finally ended, you are wrong. Surprise surprise, here is another one coming your way.

This time round, it featured tiles popping up spontaneously in Yishun Ring Road flats. Yes, we don’t get it either. What is happening to our Yishun district?

According to Channel 8 News, living room tiles in a Yishun Ring Road HDB flat cracked and popped up spontaneously around 11:00 p.m. on 30 January 2017. Fortunately, when the incident happened, no one was at risk. A Madam Chen told Channel 8 News that her four-month-old was resting on the sofa, while her two other nieces, aged two and seven, who usually play on the living room floor, were not around.

Personnel from the Housing Development Board (HDB) visited the Block 398 on the next day at 10.40am and did an investigation. However, it was concluded that it wasn’t a structural issue.

Mdm Chen also added that when her tiles popped, her neighbour living directly below her thought that their ceiling had fallen. It must have been really scary to have the thought of your ceiling falling upon you!

Furthermore, it is reported that the neighbour’s flat also had popped tiles several months ago. Now, why do the tiles pop and crack so easily? HDB’s website has come up with reasons to address this issue.

  • Why this happens:
    • Impact by heavy object
    • Different rates of expansion or contraction between the tile and substrate
  • Solution:
    • Remove and re-tile if necessary

While tiles popped in Yishun flat, we drew some similarities with our office lift lobby as well. Take a look at this; our tiles have presented themselves neatly in a row. Yes, our tiles have cracked.

There was even a notice to inform us of the reason why it popped. In case you aren’t able to read the print, here is what it says:=.

“Floor tiles have been noticed to have been popping up because of the homogenous nature of the tiles after a period of years.

Please do not be alarmed as this is a common flooring problem and does not affect the structural condition of the beam and slab which are in good condition as inspected by our PE earlier.”

It turns out to be a common flooring problem that tiles are subjected to. Given the humid weather in Singapore and the constant construction going on all around us, it is inevitable that some of our tiles experience a difference in the rate of expansion and contraction.
