These days we really are placing a whole lot of focus on cabs, huh.

Just this week, we’ve done at least 4 articles about Grab, Uber and standard Taxis! Well, this makes sense though. With the recent changes in the industry, there are always juicy news waiting for us around every corner.

And now, we have news of a new app that can direct cabbies to areas of high demand.

In a report by The Straits Times,  a taxi guidance system is being co-developed by a laboratory in Singapore Management University (SMS). It is a joint effort by SMU, Japanese technology firm Fujitsu, and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star).

Whew, I don’t know about you guys, but I think this would be very useful for hard working drivers trying to get more customers!

The system will use historical data and real-time data from the Land Transport Authority to predict the demand for taxis. The locations and status of a taxi would then be used for the prediction.

“This gives us a pretty good idea of the demand and supply of taxis in a certain area,” said Associate Professor Cheng Shih-Fen, deputy director of research at the laboratory.

After being introduced by the National Taxi Association (NTA), the app has produced “positive results” for more than 400 drivers.

Drivers who used the app between 12 am to 6 am on weekdays in the CBD only had approximately 12 minutes of empty cruising time, as compared to the 17 minutes experienced by those who don’t use the app!

Well, looks like this really is a practical innovation. This could very well give taxi drivers an edge over private hire cars! With this, finding customers should be easier as compared to the past.

Maybe the number of taxis will stop decreasing because of this? Let’s see how things will turn out for them in the long run.

That being said, maybe they can also come up with something for people trying to hail a taxi? It would be nice if we can know about the number of available taxis in the area!
