3,432 COVID-19 Cases Reported on 28 Oct with 15 Deaths

All of us got quite a shock on Wednesday (27 Aug) when our case count surpassed the 5,000 mark all of a sudden.

Before that, cases had hovered around the 3,000 to 4,000 range.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) called it an “unusual surge”, and fortunately, this turned out to be the case.

3,432 New COVID-19 Cases

3,432 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday (28 Oct), a decrease of 1,892 from the previous day’s tally.

The cases comprise 3,171 infections in the community, 252 in migrant worker dormitories, and nine imported infections.

Among the local cases are 545 seniors above 60.

Sadly, while the number of new COVID-19 went down, more people passed away from the disease.

15 COVID-19 Fatalities

15 more COVID-19 cases succumbed to the virus, bringing Singapore’s death toll to 364.

Aged between 62 and 98, all the fatalities had underlying medical conditions.

The health ministry did not specify how many of them were unvaccinated nor what these medical conditions were.

Clusters at Preschools & IMH Grow

MOH said it is closely monitoring six large clusters at the moment, including the one at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH); with four new cases, the cluster now has 158 infections, comprising 146 patients and 12 staff.

The cluster at PCF Sparkletots @ Whampoa Block 85 has also grown to 12 after three more cases were linked to it. Ten students and two household contacts of cases have been infected there.

Another preschool on the list – Maple Bear Loyang – grew to 18 infections, 13 of whom are students.

Our largest cluster on the list is the one at the Bukit Batok Home for the Aged, with 159 cases. With the exception of six staff members, all of those infected are residents.

The other two clusters are:

  • AWWA Community Home for Senior Citizens – two new cases, 84 in total
  • United Medical Centre – Toa Payoh – one new case, 139 in total

294 serious cases require oxygen supplementation and 136 are in the intensive care unit, comprising 75 cases who are unstable and under close monitoring to prevent further deterioration, and 61 who are critically ill and intubated.

In addition, there are 20,202 cases undergoing home recovery, 4,581 in community care facilities, and 942 are in COVID-19 treatment facilities.

Currently, 84% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.

Statistics Show Vaccines Vital for Elderly

In its report, the health ministry also released statistics on the coronavirus’ effects on vaccinated and unvaccinated COVID-19 patients in hospitals.

Over the past seven days, the number of fully vaccinated and non-fully vaccinated cases who have been critically ill in the ICU are at 0.5 and 4.3 per 100,000 population respectively, it said.

Among seniors aged 60 and above, though, the number of fully vaccinated and non-fully vaccinated cases who have been critically ill in the ICU are 2.1 and 34.0 respectively. The same figures for fully vaccinated and non-fully vaccinated seniors who died are 0.3 and 8.9 respectively.

Over the same period, the number of fully vaccinated and non-fully vaccinated cases who died are 0.1 and 0.9 per 100,000 population respectively.

At present, 14% of our population has received booster shots. The ratio of community cases for the past week over the week before is 1.13 (week-on-week growth).
