What was supposed to be an enjoyable family getaway turned out to be the last when Kurnia Hardiman Sumardi, 43, was found dead on Lazarus Island on Tuesday (29 Mar) morning.
Here’s what happened.
Went for a Swim But Went Missing
Kurnia had gone to Lazarus Island last Saturday for a two-day getaway with his family members and relatives.
They were scheduled to return home on Sunday afternoon.
Before leaving the island, Kurnia said he wanted to visit the beach and went for a swim in the sea.
However, he never returned.
Kurnia’s stepdaughter Yanna Aziman, 28, later received a call from her mother on Sunday afternoon where she was notified that he had been missing since noon.
Police and SCDF Alerted
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for assistance at around 1.25pm on Sunday near Lazarus Island and dispatched two marine vessels to the location.
The police said they were also alerted to a case of suspected drowning involving a man at sea near Lazarus Island on Sunday at about 1.30pm.
Continued to Search for Kurnia
Speaking to Lianhe Zaobao, Yanna said the water was “very deep” and they were very worried.
She added that her stepfather was wearing only a pair of dark blue trousers at the time he disappeared.
Yanna’s mother returned home with the rest of the family but went back to the island to continue looking for him the next day.
Unfortunately, it was to no avail.

Family members also took to Facebook to appeal to the public to keep a lookout for Kurnia and sought prayers for him.
Facebook page Boats & Related Stuff For Sale In Singapore also urged those near Lazarus Island to keep an eye out for Kurnia around the island and the beaches nearby.
Unfortunately, the family’s worst fears came true when Kurnia’s body was found around 2.50am near the shoreline on Tuesday.
Police are currently investigating the matter.
Family Asks to Stop Spreading Video of Body
In a Facebook post, Yanna wrote about Kurnia, saying, “He was a loving husband to my mother and was a[n] involved father in our short life together. He was a[n] amazing human being all in all.”
She appealed to the public to stop spreading videos of his body being found as the family was still grieving.
“If you have the video, please do delete it or just keep it to yourself. In this cruel cruel world, let’s all practise some kindness and empathy,” she added.
It is indeed a tragic loss to the family so do respect their privacy and refrain from spreading more information or the video.
