Everyone was shocked when a 100kg false ceiling reportedly collapsed after renovations, and when the owner revealed that the ceiling was only held up by 4 nails.
However, the contractor has spoken up to clear their name, and said that 50 screws were used, not four.
100kg False Ceiling Crashed Into Bed, Sounded Like Earthquake
On the afternoon of 8 June, Ms Wendy Liu decided to bring her children out to take pictures instead of lounging on the bed together.
This sudden decision saved their lives as at 6pm that day, the false ceiling of the newly-renovated master bedroom had collapsed on the bed.
Ms Liu’s domestic worker, who was in the flat, heard a loud crash that “sounded like an earthquake”, and rushed to see what had happened. The impact of the 100kg false ceiling’s collapse was so large that even her neighbour went over to ask what happened.
The four-room Dawson Road HDB flat recently completed renovation works, which was when the false ceiling was installed.
50, Not Four Nails Supporting 100kg
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Ms Liu said that after carefully inspecting the fallen ceiling, she realised the contractor only installed for small nails to support the ceiling.
As the ceiling was supported by a metal frame, it could have easily weighed about 100kg. How could four nails support that much weight?
However, the contractor SR Tech Engineering has spoken up and told Yahoo News Singapore that it was actually 50 screws that supported the four sides of the false ceiling. This was in addition to the four screws in the centre of the ceiling, which was what Ms Liu saw.
The contractor also revealed that the renovation works were completed in January. As for what caused the collapse, investigations are still ongoing.
The contractor is currently accommodating the family at a hotel and repairing the damages done. They will also carry out some lighting works for free.
Additionally, they’re also offering compensation of $1,100, which is double the price of the ceiling work amount.

No Complaints Against Contractor
According to Yahoo News Singapore, the president of the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) said that they didn’t receive any complaints against the contractor from 2019 till now.
Additionally, he mentioned that consumers should use the services of CaseTrust accredited renovation contractors. These contractors are required to protect the customer’s deposit.
This is done through the purchase of a deposit performance bond, which safeguards against business closure, winding up or liquidation before a renovation is completed.
Additionally, these contractors have proper dispute resolution processes.
Furthermore, HDB flat owners should engage contractors from HDB’s directory of renovation contractors. These contractors are required to adhere to HDB’s rules, and ensures that the works are done safely and doesn’t damage the property.
