Though we might say that death means the end of your existence, some people continue to make a difference even in death, leaving their mark on this world.

This is the case for 52-year-old Or Cheng Khim, who passed away in a fatal lorry accident earlier this year in January.

52YO Saves 5 Lives Through Organ Donation After Her Passing

Following Ms Or’s accident, her family did what she would have wanted and agreed to organ donations. Speaking to The New Paper (TNP), her son, Soon Ching, said, “This is something that we knew my mother would have wanted. She was a generous person who liked to help others.”

As reported by Shin Min Daily News, the organs Ms Or donated has helped five others gain a new chance at life. The five people who benefitted from the organ donation includes two visually impaired men—a 21-year-old and an 82-year-old—who are now able to see normally after receiving Ms Or’s cornea.

The other three—a 27-year-old man, a 47-year-old woman, and a 42-year-old mother—also had their lives saved thanks to Ms Or’s organ donation. The first two benefitted from her kidney donation, while the 42-year-old mother benefitted from her liver donation.

For her selfless contribution, Ms Or was given a thank-you card from the National Organ Transplant Unit.

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Ms Or’s sisters told them that while the family is still grieving her passing, they take consolation knowing that Ms Or has helped save five other lives. Ms Or’s sister added, “Not every organ can find a suitable recipient. So I think she’s lucky to be able to help others, too.”

Details of the Accident

The fatal accident took place on 12 January 2021 around 8:25pm, near the junction of Yuan Ching Road and Yung Kuang Road at Jurong. She was just a short distance away from her home.

Ms Or had been making her way home from work to celebrate her son’s ‘O’ Level results when she was hit by a lorry. According to The New Paper, she had been planning on surprising her son with sushi, which was his favourite food.

She was immediately brought to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH), where CT scans showed severe brain swelling. Her family was told that she was in critical condition.

Unfortunately, Ms Or succumbed to her injuries and passed away two days later, on 14 January.

The 69-year-old driver of the lorry involved in the accident was arrested for careless driving causing death.

According to The New Paper, the family has since forgiven the lorry driver. “It was difficult for our family, but we are doing what my sister would have done. She was forgiving and helpful,” said Ms Or’s sister.

Remembered As An Active Person

Ms Or was a pre-school teacher’s assistant and a freelance balloon sculptor, providing services to schools and private celebrations.

In her free time, she enjoyed rearing caterpillars and releasing them when they had grown into butterflies. She was even an active volunteer at the Bukit Panjang Butterfly Garden.

Following the accident, a butterfly-themed wake was held. Friends of Ms Or constructed a butterfly sculpture out of 3,000 balloons in order to commemorate her. Her friends stated that “it [was] a good way to send her off.”
