Fret not—they’re not there to catch you doing a PDA with your new girlfriend, or to catch you littering.

There’re there for a higher purpose—not just to deter crimes, but to also detect and solve crimes that take place in the premises. The numbers have been announced three days ago: apparently, there were a total of 62,000 cameras installed in HDB blocks and car parks: this comprises 10,000 blocks and car parks. They will also be installed in new BTO flats and car parks.

As of May 2016, the police have used 2,300 video footages from the cameras to help solve more than 1,100 cases, like loan shark activities, theft and outrages of modesty.

This initiative, called PolCam 1.0, started in April 2012. Now, the police are upping their game: a new initiative, aptly named PolCam 2.0, will now install cameras in public areas like town centres, hawker centres or walkways.

First announced in April this year (2016), PolCam 2.0 will involve 11,000 cameras at 2,500 locations island-wide, and its installations are projected to be done by the end of 2020.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Lau Peet Meng said, “We will continue to leverage on technology as part of our crime-fighting and counter-terrorism strategies to ensure a safe and secure home for everyone.”

Now, whoever you are, if you want to commit a crime and think that the police aren’t watching, think again.

You can run, but you can’t hide.
