7 Interesting Facts About Yishun Other than It’s Cursed

Where do all the strangest things in Singapore happen? Cat murders? Bloodied man in the middle of a crowded mall? A corpse floating in a dam? Check, check, and check. Yishun has really had a long streak of bad luck. However, we’ve got some facts that you might find more interesting than the constant lament of The Curse Of Yishun.

1. Its name came from a ‘pineapple king’

Forget PPAP, Yishun carries the legend of a pineapple pioneer. Nee Soon was translated to Yishun in Mandarin, as Lim Nee Soon was a prominent industrialist who specialized in the trade of pineapples and rubber.

2. It has really bad reputation

Perhaps this reputation comes from all the bad news that sprouts from there. For more information, you can refer to the article here

3. Someone is taking it upon himself to hold up Yishun’s reputation

Twitter: @YishunMan

A Twitter account called Yishun Man was created, terming the area the ‘the most happening district in Singapore’.

He isn’t totally wrong. His humorous tweets are dripping with sarcasm (or is that pride) about how great Yishun is, and are good reads on a slow day.

4. We would actually love to live there

I mean, apart from all the bad rep, Yishun isn’t a bad place to live in.

For example, Yishun Pond Park allows visitors to take a quiet walk among the rustling emerald bushes and gentle breeze, on a stretch of wooden bridge.

5. It holds a strong sense of culture

A resident living in Yishun, Koh Nguang How, has made the effort to store little snippets of Singapore history, in particular around Yishun.

Newspapers and posters are part of his collection and the one-man museum also contains pictures of past events, performances, and other art pieces. In fact, his artifacts have been displayed at an exhibition before.

6. You can trade away unwanted books there!

For those who love a good read every now and then, or simply wish to find books for children, there’s a spot for doing so right at Yishun Block 290!

Despite being a plain white shelf, it has plenty for readers to pick up, from comics to cookbooks, to even self-help books! And once you’re done, assuming you’ve kept it in good condition as well, you can return to the area and swap for another book!

7. It’s got plenty of heart!

By that, we mean that there are definitely kind people, not just the occasional crime-doer or queer accident.

A 12-year old child came forward in an attempt to free a pregnant woman from a car crash. His assistance was followed up by SCDF’s arrival later on, where all victims of the car crash were reported to be safe.

Not only that, small acts of kindness can be seen, like when SAF medics stepped forward to help an old lady who had fallen down some stairs.

Maybe Yishun isn’t just about the bad luck and odd news floating about. For the town termed as crazy by many Singaporeans, it’s got something charming about it too.
