It’s finally time for Yishun to shine.
In a good way that doesn’t involve cat killers, murderers, crazy people or Singapore President wanting to stay there.
Okay, fine. The last one can be taken as good or bad, depending on how patriotic you are.
But anyway, we’ve written about Yishun’s new high-tech hawker centre previously and how Yishunites were eagerly waiting for it to open.
Finally something good to look forward to in the area, yeah?
Guess what? It’s opened for business!
Here are 8 facts about the Yishun new hawker centre that’ll make you want to shift there immediately. #LetsMakeYishunGreatAgain
1. It’s Not Far From The MRT
Okay, this isn’t related to how great it is but really, how can you introduce a place without talking about the location, right?
Located along Yishun Ave 11 and Yishun Ring Road, it’s a little far from the MRT station, but still within walking distance from the station if you’re willing to walk 20 minutes (at least, according to Google Maps).
2. The New Hawker Centre Isn’t As Hip As You’ll Think
Okay, I’d admit it.
When we first heard that it’s opened by Hipster operator, Timbre +, we were imagining something like this.
But we got something like this instead.
3. But it’s still a cool hawker centre though
Remember your SAF days where there are Street Fighter vs Marvel arcade games beside the canteen?
Yes, this beautiful combination is going to be available in a public place soon.
The hawker centre will have a Games Square where arcade games and pinball machines for use. This will come at a later date.
They’ll also screen sports matches on a large screen on selected days. Think cold mugs of Tiger beer, friends and Arsenal vs Chelsea.
Heavenly.
4. There’s going to be an app that allows you to order food electronically
Yes, hawker centres will soon have “online shopping” too. Just like restaurants who lets you order with iPads.
Except that you’ll be using your own phone to do so.
And if that’s not awesome enough, the app will also help you make cashless payments, as well as store credits for the next time you eat there.
5. Cleaners will have an easier time working there
Remember the cleaning aunty who thinks that they have a lot of work to do even if they don’t clear trays?
She’ll love this place because they have a tray return area with RFID technology integrated with the centralised dishwashing area to make the cleaners’ jobs easier.
6. Every stall will have at least one meal that cost just $3
Let me tell you the most awesome thing about this hawker centre.
It’s mandatory for each of their 43 stallholders (whom Timbre+ refers to as Hawker Heroes) to offer at least 1 meal that cost $3.
It was announced that the hawker centre will be managed by Timbre Group on a not-for-profit basis.
7. Timbre Group wants to preserve S’pore Hawker Culture
Out of the 43 stallholders, 13 of them are new kids on the block.
And out of 13 of them, two are going through an incubation period before they are moved elsewhere to another hawker centre.
Either Timbre Group’s other F&B outlets or recommended to NEA.
Timbre Group is looking to preserve Singapore’s hawker heritage through this initiative by introducing young people into the trade.
8. Expect Instagram-worthy and unique food items
The place might not seem much but the food items are worth getting excited over.
Think Yong Tau Foo in donburi form.
Or super cute Japanese bento.
Yishun peeps, suddenly I’m so envious of you. #Legit.
