A 34-year-old domestic helper has been jailed for 11 weeks after abusing a 69-year-old woman with dementia who depended heavily on her for daily care.
Indonesian national Maria Inggrid Seran pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt to a vulnerable person.
She was sentenced on Friday, 4 September.
The elderly woman was unable to communicate and could not be interviewed during investigations because of her condition.
Woman Had Become Heavily Dependent on Helper
Seran had been caring for the woman since March 2023 and knew about her medical conditions and vulnerability.
Besides Alzheimer's dementia, the woman had several other health conditions, including type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
By November 2025, she could no longer look after or feed herself.
She relied mainly on Seran for everyday needs, including getting in and out of bed and moving into her wheelchair.
Under Singapore's Penal Code, a “vulnerable person” generally refers to someone who, because of a mental or physical condition, disability or incapacity, is substantially unable to protect himself or herself from abuse, neglect or self-neglect.
CCTV Captured Abuse While Helper Was Feeding Her
The offence before the court took place on the morning of 20 April 2026.
Seran was feeding the woman breakfast when the older woman became frustrated. Seran then became angry and slapped her twice across the face and once on the head.
The court also heard that Seran struck or roughly handled parts of the woman's body, including her hands and legs. The Straits Times reported that she twisted one of the woman's fingers, while CNA reported that she also hit her feet and pinched her nose twice.
The woman's children had installed CCTV cameras in the home, and the incident was recorded.
Later that day, one of the woman's sons received footage of his mother being assaulted from his brother. He called the police at about 7.30pm, and Seran was arrested.
Medical examinations did not detect injuries, although the court heard that the woman experienced pain in several areas after the assault.
Helper Admitted This Was Not the First Assault
According to the prosecution, Seran later admitted that she had assaulted the woman before.
She said she had previously done so because she wanted to stop what she described as the woman's nagging, and believed frightening her would make her quiet.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Jun Kai sought between 11 and 13 weeks' jail.
He highlighted how dependent the victim was on Seran and noted that the offences could have been difficult to uncover without the CCTV recordings.
Seran, who did not have a lawyer, asked the court for a lighter sentence through an interpreter.
District Judge Lim Wee Meng sentenced her to 11 weeks' jail, taking into account the need for deterrence in domestic violence cases, the victim's inability to care for herself and the harm caused.
Voluntarily causing hurt can ordinarily result in up to three years' jail, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both.
Where an offender knew or reasonably should have known that the victim was a vulnerable person, the law allows the court to impose up to twice the usual maximum punishment.
