AMK Hub Road Changes to Last About 18 Months From 14 November After MRT Tunnelling Hits Obstructions

Road changes around AMK Hub will begin on 14 November 2026 and are expected to remain until May 2028, after underground obstructions forced Cross Island Line tunnelling works to stop.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the changes on 16 October to provide space for investigations and recovery works.

The estimated 18-month period may change as work progresses.

What Changes For Motorists And Pedestrians

Along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, the eastbound stretch between AMK Hub’s pick-up and drop-off point and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 will become a bus-only lane. Westbound traffic lanes will be reduced from three to two.

AMK Hub’s basement car park and pick-up and drop-off point will remain accessible, although arrangements for entering and leaving the latter will change.

LTA expects motorists entering the mall during peak periods to face longer queues and an additional 10 to 15 minutes of travel time.

The eastbound footpath will close, with pedestrians diverted through AMK Hub. The pedestrian crossing will also move.

Ground-level access to the overhead bridge on the mall side will close. Pedestrians can access it through AMK Hub’s second floor during mall operating hours.

Bus stops will remain accessible, with barrier-free access maintained.

Underground Anchors Halted Tunnelling

LTA identified the obstructions as ground anchors, steel supports installed underground to hold retaining walls or structures in place.

Workers extracted about 800kg of wire ropes from the tunnelling machine between May and July, replacing 22 damaged cutters.

LTA is investigating the anchors’ origins and assessing the impact on the construction schedule.

In response to CNA’s queries, LTA said the anchors were absent from available records and as-built drawings. Borehole investigations can also miss slender anchors unless they intersect them.
