Amazon Opens New Three-Storey Office in S’pore & Aims to Engage Over 300 More People

Last year, there was a rumour going around that Amazon would be expanding its operations here.

While many businesses have been struggling to stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon has thrived.

Well, we now have confirmation that Amazon has opened a new, giant office here, and that they’re looking for people to fill it.

Amazon Opens New Three-Storey Office in S’pore & Aims to Engage Over 300 More People

Named SIN16, Amazon’s new office is located at Asia Square in Marina Bay and will occupy more than 100,000 sqft, spanning three floors.

It was officially opened yesterday (27 Oct) and the company is now looking to recruit over 300 more employees.

“The company plans to expand its local workforce across its consumer business and corporate functions with over 110 job openings currently available in Singapore,” it said in a news release.

In addition, the online retailer said it plans to create over 200 new jobs in Singapore by end-2022. Adding new jobs will help expand its range of offerings in the country and help support local businesses go global, it added.

Over 30 teams and up to 700 employees will be working in the Asia Square office, including those supporting Amazon.sg, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Advertising, and Prime Video.

The mammoth office has 12 phone booths, 33 “quiet rooms”, 50 areas for informal discussions and brainstorming, and five large meeting rooms with videoconferencing capabilities, among other spaces.

Company Has Invested in Singapore Since 2010

The company has reportedly been investing in Singapore since 2010. It first expanded its operations to Singapore in 2018.

Amazon said that since 2019, it has created 1,000 jobs here. It currently has around 2,000 full-time and part-time employees.

Profits Have Soared During Pandemic

Much like the coronavirus, Amazon has shown no signs of slowing down in the last year or so.

In fact, the pandemic has been rather profitable for the online retailer; in the first quarter of 2021, Amazon reported earnings of $8.11 billion.

From 31 March 2020 to 31 March this year, the online retailer earned a whopping $26.9 billion, topping its profits for each of the last three years. This is largely because it has provided services that have been in great demand during the pandemic, such as e-commerce (mostly toilet paper last year) and cloud computing.

Minister: Amazon has Supported Local SMEs

One man who attended the opening of Amazon’s new office was Minister of Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, who said he is “grateful” for Amazon’s close partnership in various government initiatives throughout the pandemic.

“In addition to supporting our small- and medium-sized enterprises, Amazon has created many good job opportunities for Singaporeans in tech and non-tech roles within the technology sector,” he said.
