Trust me when I say, badminton is no easy sport - well, at least for me, considering the number of times I accidentally hit myself with my own racket... That said, I'm a strong believer of "the best is yet to come", "never say never", "there's always room for improvement." You know, that kinda stuff. If anything, Yeo Jia Min has proven all of this true and more with her grit and perseverance at the BWF World Championships in Basel, Switzerland on Tuesday, 20 August 2019. Image: Yeo Jia Min Facebook According to The Straits Times, she emerged champion in a "sensational upset", knocking out world number 1 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the round of 32. In just 39 minutes, Yeo Jia Min claimed the victory title in a 21-14, 21-18 win over Akane Yamaguchi who was the World Champions bronze medalist in 2018. Whew. Previously Lost To Akane Yamaguchi To date, this is one of her greatest achievements. Factoring in the fact that she had previously lost to Akane Yamaguchi recently at the Badminton Asia Championships in April 2019, her victory is even more satisfying. It proves to us that being defeated once doesn't mean that we can't climb to the top. It proves that we can always get back on our feet and it reminds us never to give up in the face of failure. How did she do it, you ask? Well, she told Yahoo News, “From the start, I tried to focus on every point and not to make simple errors like I used to do, and I tried to control my emotions.” Other Victories And if you thought that was all Yeo had to offer, think again. She recently bagged the championship title for the Hyderabad Open as well as the Vietnam Open in 2018, which were both Super 100 tournaments.
