Ceiling Collapse at Choa Chu Kang Giant Supermarket Raises Safety Concerns
We’ve all heard about ceiling collapses during heavy rain, such as the incidents in Ang Mo Kio and the Woodlands Dormitory.
It’s a reminder that even sheltered areas are not immune to such mishaps.
On the first day of the new year, another alarming incident occurred at a Giant supermarket in Jurong West’s Keat Hong Shopping Centre.
This unsettling event took place in the early evening at 6:30 PM.
Earlier Inspection: No Issues Detected
In the wake of previous incidents, like the one in Ang Mo Kio, where a sheltered walkway succumbed to heavy rain, or the Woodlands Dormitory incident, it’s clear that these occurrences can happen even in seemingly safe, enclosed spaces.
The incident was captured in a video posted on the Facebook page “Complaint Singapore.”
The footage reveals a substantial hole in the ceiling, with a central panel having dislodged and side panels dangling precariously.
In response to The New Paper, a spokesperson for Giant supermarket affirmed that their primary concern is the safety of their customers.
They assured that no one was injured during the incident, and the affected area was promptly cordoned off.
What’s intriguing is that during an earlier inspection of the supermarket, no issues were identified.
Mr Lee, a 63-year-old witness, informed Shin Min Daily News that the supermarket’s ceiling had been replaced two to three years ago.
However, he noted that the new panels appeared heavier.
This discrepancy in weight might have placed undue stress on the ageing supporting metal bars, ultimately resulting in the ceiling’s collapse.
The affected area remained sealed off as authorities investigate the matter further.
Previously in July last year, a sheltered walkway near Block 703 in Ang Mo Kio collapsed.
It was raining heavily when the incident occurred. An eyewitness also saw a massive piece of the fallen ceiling lying in the middle of the walkway.
The rain and strong winds most likely caused the ceiling to collapse, the ceiling was constantly leaking water could also be another reason.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular safety inspections and maintenance to prevent potential hazards.
Thankfully, No One Was Hurt
In a fortunate turn of events, the supermarket’s stock replenishment personnel, who typically organise and restock the shelves, had concluded their work around 6:15 PM.
Fortunately, they had already stopped their work when the ceiling collapsed at approximately 6:30 PM.
This timing spared them from being in harm’s way.
Mr Lee also recounted his observations during the incident.
He noticed another customer in front of him selecting items from the shelves.
Thankfully, this customer’s leisurely pace prevented him from walking directly into the path of the falling ceiling panel.
In response to the incident and to forestall similar occurrences, Giant supermarket has pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
They will only reopen the affected area once the issue is fully resolved and meets stringent safety standards.
