So if you’re not already aware, former Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin and former MP Cheng Li Hui recently resigned from their posts because of their illicit relationship.
Mr Tan is married with two children. And no, his lifelong promise was not to Ms Cheng.
Suffice it to say; the news got the whole nation sitting up. Political scandals have, after all, been relatively rare.
Until recently, when all hell broke loose anyway.
But here’s the thing; while the affair has undoubtedly attracted a great deal of local attention, it seems that even the international audience has caught onto it.
And let’s say that it has turned from a 9-5 affair…
To a 9-4.
“Have You Been Paying Attention?”
Recently, the critically acclaimed Australian quiz show “Have You Been Paying Attention?” featured the saga alongside the accompanying question:
“Singapore has been rocked by a rare political scandal. Why have these two lawmakers resigned?”
For context, the show is famous for merging current affairs and comedy. So you can expect certain answers to come out.
One speculated that it was because of noodles. Another wondered whether both parties had cheated with Gladys Berejiklian.
To put it into perspective, Gladys Berejiklian is an Australian politician who had been in a secret relationship with former Wagga Wagga Liberal MP Daryl Maguire. Daryl Maguire was married at the time. So their relationship was not unlike that of Mr Tan and Ms Cheng, except that their relationship also contained traces of corruption that is currently plaguing Minister Iswaran.
So it’s like merging the affair and probe cases together.
But I’m digressing; because the critical point here is actually what happened next.
Australian Comedienne Said Cheng Li Hui is a 9 While Tan Chuan-Jin is a 4
And so, the next panellist chipped in with her own remark. Though unlike the other two, this one was more “personal”.
“Well, can I say he’s doing very well?” Australian actress-comedienne Kitty Flanagan observed. “Because they are not a match.”
“She’s a nine. He’s a four.”
Yes, those numbers were derived from the attractiveness scale.
At this point, you may wonder why Mr Tan has been dealt with such an unflattering number when he had, in fact, often been complimented for his looks before this whole ordeal. Heck, he was even impersonated on dating apps before.
But, well, it’s not that far-reaching when you see the picture they’ve selected for him.
Ms Cheng, on the other hand, is positively glowing in the image.
And so, the Australian comedienne could be somewhat understood for adding the following remarks, even if it was jokingly.
“He’s 70,” she joked. “She’s, what, 25?”
In actuality, Mr Tan is 54 years old this year.
Ms Cheng is 47.
There was also another interesting bit at the end, where one of the panellists asked why they had to resign over the affair.
Another contestant then asked whether he was asking for a friend.
Meanwhile, Netizens were pretty entertained by the segment.
While some laughed at the attractiveness ratings…
Others doubted the validity of the ratings.
And some even disagreed with the ratings altogether and sided with other like-minded individuals.
In case you’ve no idea, this was how Mr Tan used to look when he was younger.
A friendly reminder that no matter how good-looking you are in your prime, there comes a time when you fall down the pecking order (in terms of attractiveness).
Though, of course, as some Netizens have stated, he does look a lot better than most men his age.
I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.
