Mob mentality is a scary thing.
We see it all the time on Twitter these days. Someone publishes an opinion online, and humans all over the world who disagree join forces to troll and insult them until they are reduced to nothingness.
And if a crowd spots someone doing something in public that offends them, well, they may not bring out their pitchforks as they do in the movies, but they’ll do their best to punish the criminal in the most violent way possible.
Other more crafty groups like this crowd in Indonesia resort to other means of punishing criminals around them.
Crowd Nearly Strips Woman As Punishment After They Caught Her Trespassing; Thought She Was Male
A woman in Indonesia, known as NN, was nearly stripped naked by an angry mob after she was caught trespassing.
Instagram user Bekasi uploaded a video showing the angry crowd questioning the woman before attempting to take her clothes off.
According to Instagram user Bekasi Terkini, NN pretended to be a guest at a resident’s home, casually visiting the home by slipping into one of the bedrooms in the house.
The owner who was sleeping in the room woke up and screamed when he saw NN in his room.
And then the whole neighbourhood lost their minds.
Many who lived nearby came to the resident’s home to scold and interrogate the woman. As Bekasi says, though, everyone thought she was a male in disguise.
“To friends at home, please be careful of women who pretend to be a guest and that will casually slip into your bedroom. The event took place at Setia Mulya Village, Tarumajaya, Bekasi. She tried to deceive people by wearing hijab” the caption reads.
You can watch the video of the interrogation here:
If you can’t see the video, here’s what happens.
The video starts with the crowd surrounding the seated woman, shouting and aggressively interrogating her. The woman is visibly distressed.
They then start to take her hijab off, because they believe she disguised herself as a man to get into the house.
As you can see, she’s wearing a black headscarf with a denim jacket and a pair of jeans. I’ve seen many women wearing this kind of clothing, though, so I don’t really see why they would mistake her for a man.
But this crowd strongly believed she was actually male. So, they started to strip the woman, starting with her headscarf.
They discovered that the woman’s hair was dyed, and according to World of Buzz, this confirmed the mob’s suspicions that she was male.
So, they did what any sensible mob would do. They started to strip the woman of her clothes.
NN quickly shouted “I’m a girl!” and some of the less incensed people in the crowd stopped the rest from stripping her.
The crowd then did what they should have done earlier; they called the authorities.
NN was handed over to the police soon after. Yudho Anto Hutri, the Tarumajaya Police Chief, stressed that the ‘man’ was indeed a woman.
Now, even if NN did steal something, does that justify stripping her naked in front of everyone? How can we do such an awful thing to another for such a trivial crime?
Don’t take the law into your own hands, people.
