Benedict Cumberbatch Swears Never to Co-Star With Cats Again After Bad Experience With Them

Fellow Cumberbatch fans so far have been thrilled to see the British actor being active in a repertoire of works in cinema.

From performing as the charismatic Marvel superhero Dr. Strange to his gripping act as a stoic, repressed rancher in Netflix’s Western film The Power of the Dog, Benedict Cumberbatch has delighted his fans time and time again with his acting prowess across different film genres.

That being said, he might only have one weakness—and that is the inability to work with cats on film sets in the future.

Extremely Hard to Work with Grown Cats

Speaking with a film correspondent from The Straits Times, Benedict Cumberbatch, along with his co-star, Claire Foy, recounted their experiences in working with felines for the upcoming film, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain which has been available in cinemas from 7 April onwards.

The film is a biographical comedy-drama film about the life of British artist, Louis Wain, who was known for his eccentric drawings of huge-eyed cats and kittens beginning from the late 1800s.

While Cumberbatch recounted that it was easy to work with kittens when they were bribed with treats and toys, it was a completely different story when it came to adult cats.

“Don’t expect your working day to be smooth if you’re expecting a cat to do anything that needs to be done,” Cumberbatch said according to The Straits Times.

He added, ” My contract riders will now say, ‘Forever Foy, never cats.'”

Other Instances where Cumberbatch Worked with Animals On Set

For The Power of the Dog, the British actor also picked up on cattle wrangling skills that he had to have to emulate the character he was playing for the Netflix film.

His cattle wrangling skills were good enough to help a family in real life when they found themselves stuck in a field due to a herd of cows.

The 45-year-old actor also learned how to play a banjo (an instrument associated with folk and country music) and rode a horse. The actor went a step further and lived on a ranch for two months in preparation for his role according to Yahoo.

One can only wish that cats were that easy to handle as Cumberbatch explains adult cats at times will refuse to perform despite repeated tries from their trainers which can lead to unexpected filming delays.

Still, fur-tunately, the film is completed and is now showing in cinemas and hopefully the British actor will have a more paw-sitive experience with these furry creatures in the near future.
