It is normal to have things we cannot stand in our partner. However, what happens when this becomes too unbearable?
Yes, it’s way beyond your partner’s smelly farts and picking their nose all the time.
S’pore Court Allows Man to Divorce Woman Who Was Overly Obsessed With Her Dogs
A man was granted a divorce from his wife who displayed unreasonable behaviour, such as treating her pet dogs like children and refusing to look for a job.
The couple got married in November 2008 and had no children. The wife stopped working in 2013 and was previously a practising lawyer. Since then, she relied on her husband as an ATM machine.
The man commenced divorce proceedings back in July 2020. They had lived apart for at least four years but the wife said there had been no separation.
Since both sides could not reach an amicable resolution on divorce, this case was heard by the judge in a contested divorce hearing.
Her Behaviour was Unreasonable
The couple has been living separately since January 2013 due to the poor living conditions in the wife’s parents’ home and her behaviour. He lived in his parents’ place since then and added that his wife has never visited him.
The man submitted text messages as proof of how the wife demanded food and to take care of the pet dogs during their separation period.
This includes her saying, “My kids are ill. Please help them on Sunday.”
When the man said that he was not free, the woman replied, “I have to see to doggie. Make time for kids on Sunday.”
“You will have to make time, the kids need you. I have to see to doggie. He’s not doing well,” she added after he said he did not have time again.
Another incident was when his wife continued sending him messages saying how the dog is waiting for him to bring it on a walk.
The man replied, “I said I am not free and yet you insist on making the arrangements. You are so used to bullying me. I say this for one last time. I am not free.”
The woman answered, “Doggie needs you. What bully nonsense.”
His wife continued to give him instructions on what to do with the dogs despite saying no repeatedly.
Two hours after he said goodbye, she texted him: “Need Pizza hut sweet potato crust Hawaiian + cold drink” and “need food”, “I need food”, “I need food”.
Finally, the man gave in and ordered food delivery for her.
She certainly loves her dogs more than her husband.
Their Relationship was Strained Overtime
Other than the dogs, her housekeeping habits also brought unhappiness to her husband.
This includes keeping items on their bed, resulting in them sleeping on the floor while living together. She also has many items piled up throughout the house, leaving minimal space to walk around.
The wife would even threaten to kill herself if her husband did not take leave from work to take care of the dogs or order food for her.
On one occasion, she refused to leave the house for about three months and did not wash her hair during this time as she did not want her dogs to be unsupervised.
The couple has ceased their sexual relations since 2015 and noticed a change in her husband’s behaviour in late 2018 when he picked fights with her.
He reached his breaking point and contacted lawyers about divorce in 2017, but postponed it as he wanted to give her a break from her dogs’ terminal illness.
“The wife had essentially put her life on hold since 2013 due to her care for the dogs and had unreasonably harassed the husband to help her,” said the judge.
The wife also “unreasonably refused to take steps that could have eased the situation”, making it unbearable for the husband to continue in the marriage.
Wife Denied that their Marriage was Broken
The wife refused to admit her unreasonable behaviour and said that the marriage was not broken. She said that they carried on their usual routines and still continued to associate with each other as man and wife.
She added that her husband continued to care for her and her pets and paid for her expenses.
However, her husband said that it was more of pity for her and that he would be guilted into buying food for her.
Judgement from the Court
In conclusion, the judge said that it is evident that the couple were unable to live happily as husband and wife for many years. Hence, the divorce request was granted.
Even though the wife hopes to save the marriage, the husband’s stand was clear so the court cannot put together a marriage that has already been broken down.
“A marriage need not be a happy one all the time; it is characterised by the dispositions of the parties to it, who are themselves subject to the ebb and flow of life’s challenges,” the judge added.
Well, it’s unknown who’s taking the custody of the dogs, but I guess we all know the answer.
