Elderly Woman’s Harrowing Accident at Woodlands Checkpoint
An unfortunate incident involving a septuagenarian woman and a Singapore-Johore Express bus has caught public attention.
The victim claimed that as she was alighting from the bus at the Woodlands checkpoint, the vehicle moved off prematurely, leading to a series of traumatic events.
Here’s what allegedly happened.
Elderly Claims JB-SG Bus Ran Over Her Foot As She Was Alighting from Bus
On 24 June 2019, at 10:44 am, Domina (name transliterated from Chinese), who is now 75 years old, had an alarming experience at the designated bus stop and drop-off point at the Woodlands checkpoint.
As she described, while attempting to step off the rear door, the bus allegedly started moving before her feet could firmly land on the ground. This sudden movement resulted in her falling and subsequently being run over by the bus’s rear wheel.
The episode left her with multiple fractures in her lower body.
The bus captain in question, Gunaseelan, a 44-year-old from Malaysia, has found himself at the centre of legal proceedings. He is currently facing charges of negligence leading to serious injury.
However, Gunaseelan has pleaded not guilty, and the trial commenced this morning (21 August 2023).
Domina’s testimony was presented from a wheelchair in court. She recounted the events of the day, emphasizing the sequence leading up to her grievous injuries. She recalled travelling with her niece and granddaughter from Rochor Road to Malaysia.
After the bus reached the checkpoint, her niece, holding onto the granddaughter, alighted first. Domina followed, but not before ensuring that all other passengers had disembarked.
Contrasting Statements
While Domina’s version of events paints a clear picture of her ordeal, there seems to be a disparity in the accounts. She distinctly remembered the bus moving away while she was in the process of alighting, resulting in her traumatic fall. The subsequent pain and shock were so overwhelming that she screamed as the bus ran over her foot.
However, the defense, aiming to counter this narrative, brought forth a different angle. They pointed out that Gunaseelan had stated Domina had successfully disembarked. The bus captain, in his defense, mentioned checking through the rearview mirror to ensure no passengers remained. Only after closing both the front and rear doors did he initiate the bus’s movement.
Health and Employment Status
During the proceedings, Domina stressed her health condition at the time of the incident. She highlighted her ability to walk without any issues, having no underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure, and being gainfully employed as a cleaner.
This information was presented to refute any suggestions that her fall might have been due to her personal health or physical conditions.
The trial is still ongoing.
Woman Falls onto MRT Tracks at Woodlands Checkpoint, Miraculously Avoids Injury
Last month, at the Woodlands Train Checkpoint, a woman fell onto the MRT tracks, causing shock and concern among onlookers. The episode, which was captured on video and shared widely online, depicts the woman walking and then suddenly tripping, plummeting onto the tracks. Several people rushed forward in an attempt to assist, signaling for the trains to stop.
Fortunately, despite the inherent danger of the situation, no oncoming train was in the immediate vicinity at that time.
