Time-based challenges can be a fun and exhilarating experience—chasing after a prize or completing a mission within the time limit gets the adrenaline going.

But in some cases, they are very much a hazard to the “participants”, especially if their job is on the road.

S’pore TikToker Gives Free Milo & Candy As Reward For Completing Challenge

Local TikToker Erica Chan received some heat on her viral video issuing time challenges to GrabFood delivery riders, offering them free Milo and creepy bug-themed candy (a little out of season for May if you ask me) for reaching their doorstep by the stipulated time.

In her video, she explains the rules of the challenge and messages the delivery rider to reach by 7:40pm to win the free snacks.

According to the video, the rider picked up the food at 7:29pm and seemed to be running to her location, evident by the speed at which his icon moves on the screen. Chan and her boyfriend can be heard exclaiming in excitement in the background, gleeful that this rider took up their challenge.

The delivery rider managed to beat the clock and received his grand prize of Milo and bug candy from Ms Erica Chan herself.

Both Backlash & Support From Users

It’s really no surprise that she received some criticism after uploading her video to TikTok. It’s the Internet after all.

Since we’re talking about speed here, the response to her video has been rather… fast and furious.

Some users noted that the rider might have been fasting on the job while others commented that the prize was insufficient.

Yeah, I would never run such a long distance for free Milo.

Many also validly raised that Chan failed to consider the safety of the delivery riders and therefore was wrong in issuing such a challenge.

On the other hand, some of her supporters reasoned that the rider was not forced to take up the challenge and thought of the idea as fun and harmless.

Grab’s Response

Ever since the video was uploaded to the platform on 8 May, it has garnered nearly 200,000 views.

According to Mothership, a Grab spokesperson has responded to the video, discouraging customers from giving their delivery riders such challenges.

Grab stated that such time-based challenges which “[encourage] speeding… [are] unsafe for delivery-partners and broader users of shared pathways and roads.”

The spokesperson also reminded GrabFood delivery riders to prioritise safety when fulfilling deliveries by adhering to speed limits, even as they strive to deliver orders on time.

“Greater empathy and kindness for one another can help to make the delivery experience a much better one for all users.”

Looking at Chan’s profile, it seems like she hasn’t stopped to think of the consequences, considering that she had uploaded a second video issuing another rider the same challenge. This time around, however, it seems like she has gained even more backlash from users.

Her response to the angry comments hasn’t been helping her case either.

Despite all this, she firmly remains her stance that her “kind intentions” were being “blown out of proportion”.
