Everyone knows the MRT lines that break down most frequently would be the North-South Line (NSL) and the East-West Line (EWL).
So for those who commute via the other lines, you probably didn’t kena as much.
But things are starting to look different…
According to The Straits Times, there was a more than five hours delay on the Downtown Line (DTL) today (March 1).
How bad was it
Trains on both bounds of the DTL stopped at each station for about three minutes.
A short trip between Bayfront and Donwtown would usually take a minute, but it took four today.
Staff were also seen controlling the driverless trains.
In a tweet at about 7am, SBS Transit advised commuters to add an additional 15 minutes to their travel time.
“Recovery works in progress. We are sorry,” SBS Transit said.
I’m just a little less disappointed because they said sorry.
By 7.40am, free bus service were available between Bugis and Chinatown, SBS said in a tweet.
Grab
Well, it look like Murphy’s Law might be at play, because Grab was also down at the same time!
This morning, many users were complaining that they’re unable to book a ride.
You can imagine how pissed they were, when both DTL and Grab failed them at the same time!
Grab users in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam also experienced the same thing.
At about 8.30am, Grab Singapore announced on their Facebook that their staff are “looking into the issue”.
Grab expected to be “back up in 30 minutes”, Straits Times reported.
They didn’t.
About an hour later, Grab informed users that they can pay for rides using cash and cards linked to GrabPay.
Grab also assured users that it was working on restoring the GrabPay Credits and Rewards features.
Both functions were missing in the app.
By about 11 am, all services were fully restored.
“You can now resume booking with all types of payment. We are sorry for all the inconvenience caused and we thank you for your understanding,” said Grab.
Thoughts
Well, MRT breakdowns aren’t something new.
Everyone must always make plans to add additional travel time due to the inconsistency in our rail network these few years.
The huge response to Grab’s downtime also reflects our over-reliance on such services.
Are we going to continue relying on such ‘convenience’ or is there something we can do to make sure our day starts right?
