Everything You Need To Know About The Ceiling Collapse In NTU Lecture Hall in 60 Secs

Picture this: you’re sitting in a lecture hall, paying undivided attention that that teacher nobody likes, and jotting down notes on your notebook so fast a fire is going to start anytime.

All of a sudden, you hear a loud crack above you.

Paying it no heed, you continue to scribble when you realise you can’t. The teacher has actually stopped talking.

Slowly you look up, first at the teacher, then the students, then at where they are all looking at. Another crack emanated, and the entire ceiling falls on you.

Your last thought is “Well… this is a pretty lame way to die.”

If you can’t tell, what I just wrote was pure fiction.

The collapse of the ceiling at a lecture hall, however, was real.

On 21 Aug, part of a false ceiling in a lecture hall at Nanyang Technological University actually collapsed in the morning.

Luckily, there were no classes held at that time, and so, no injuries were sustained. NTU has since been checking on the structural integrity of other lecture theatres to make sure such incident does not happen again.

Or god forbid, during lesson time.

But here’s the thing.

A lesson was actually conducted after the collapse

Incredibly, a lecture was held after the ceiling collapsed.

Mr Adzizul, a final-year mechanical engineering student, told The New Paper that he had missed the lecture, and had been viewing a recording of it.

In the video, he could see debris at the back of the class and was understandably concerned. In fact, the lecture actually lasted about an hour, with the students seated towards the front.

On the bright side, employers, take note. NTU takes their programmes seriously so any students who come from the university is bound to be just as serious about the things they do.

After all, they’re willing to risk their lives for it.

Look, it’s common sense. If a part of the ceiling fell off, what makes you think that the other parts wouldn’t follow suit? Why did they even allow the lecture to continue?

NTU’s probably thinking the same thing, as they are looking into the incident right now.

The Lecture Theatre Sealed off

Lecture Theatre 1, located at the North Spine, near the Lee Wee Nam library, has been closed for repairs.

According to The New Paper, lessons will not be held there for at least a month.

In the meantime, NTU has sent an email to affected students, informing them of the collapsed ceiling and the change in venue for some of their lectures.

Thoughts

NTU IS pretty old, so it doesn’t come off so much as a surprise. I mean, if you told me a relatively new establishment like Republic Polytechnic had ceilings collapsing, I would be way more worried.

After all, everyone has heard about new BTO projects quality control, right?

Perhaps it’s time for NTU to revamp their lecture halls and facilities?

Wouldn’t want something like this to happen again. What if a class had been held? Consequences could have been dire.

What do you think?  Should NTU start thinking about improvements in the facilities? What do the NTU students think?
