Public transport in Singapore can be very ruthless, especially during peak hours.
It is an “every man for himself” situation, from squeezing into trains to running for your life just so you can catch the bus.
For people like us, it can be pretty taxing and somewhat annoying, especially after work when you’re drained and running on 5% battery (ironically my iPhone battery is also 5% by the time I end work).
What about those people in wheelchairs?
Do you think every single one of us is courteous enough to make way for them, just so they can enter the MRT cabin first and risk the chance of not being able to get in?
Have you ever thought that the handicapped person who boarded the bus is going to take up a huge space that could fit about 5 people?
I am not judging, cause I used to think like that when I was much younger and every day you learn new things and you try to be a better person and citizen.
So, let me ask you, what will you do if a handicapped person hit you with their wheelchair?
Hold that thought for now
Stomper Andre took the train from Bishan MRT Station’s Circle Line platform on Oct 16 around 2:00 p.m., and he saw a man in a motorised wheelchair waiting to get on the same train as well — towards the direction of Dhoby Ghaut.
Once the train arrived, the man rode his motorised wheelchair; he then made a left turn and started reversing into the section that was designated for wheelchairs.
Andre mentioned that were about four people in that area.
The man started to jerk, maybe he was trying to hint the passengers to make space for him.
Technically, the area is for the people who are in a wheelchair.
You wouldn’t park your car in a handicapped spot, right?
If there are no people in a wheelchair in the cabin, its fine but if there are, one should move even without being prompted.
Anyways, one of the passengers told the handicapped man that he shouldn’t be moving his wheelchair like he did.
The guy wasn’t having it and he started scolding the woman.
“Settle in the next station,” he added.
He allegedly proceeded to hit the woman with his motorised wheelchair by moving towards her.
That’s when all hell broke loose.
The woman started to berate him and the conversation was getting heated.
Out of nowhere….a Singapore Armed Forces personnel came into the picture.
He was trying to mediate the issue, but his earnest efforts were in vain.
He was definitely trying to be neutral and also ensured that he didn’t touch anyone.
Can you imagine if he did? A floodgate of insane/sexist comments will start pouring in.
They continued to bicker back and forth, and they were seen alighting at Lorong Chuan MRT Station—wanting to report the matter to one of the SMRT staff.
For those who lack a vivid imagination, here is a video:

What did the netizens say?
Several netizens sided with the woman.
This one is savage and rude.
Our hero of the story, who should be given praises for his noble act, instead got a bunch of ridiculous comments that are downright abysmal.
Just when I was losing hope…
To the hero, we appreciate your kindness!
So what do you think about this? Who is in the right? Who is in the wrong?
One thing is for sure: there is no double standard among Singaporeans. Be it if you’re handicapped or not.
It isn’t black and white, and both parties could have dealt with it better.
A word of advice; if you see someone in a wheelchair boarding the train or bus, kindly excuse yourself from the location that is designated for them.
Don’t wait for prompts; take the initiative.
And that Private (or Recruit) should really be promoted.
