A while back, we wrote about Facebookโ€™s upcoming facial recognition feature.

According to the social media giant, the innovative feature will notify you when someone posts a photo of you. A slick feature, if you think about it.

Apart from getting rid of imposters, the feature will also expose you to untagged photos (probably unglam) of you that you werenโ€™t even aware of.

Anyway, guess what?

Facebook has officially released the feature, and it has even published a step by step guide on how the whole thing works!

It started off first with the exact functions of the new feature:

  • Let you tag people quickly and easily
  • Help protect you from strangers using a photo of you as their profile picture
  • Help people with visual impairments by telling them whoโ€™s in a photo or video
  • Lets you know when you might appear in photos or videos, but havenโ€™t been tagged (youโ€™ll only be notified about photos that youโ€™re in the audience for)

If youโ€™re wondering how it works, the system actually analyses the photo, and compares it to other media, such as your profile picture and photos and videos youโ€™re tagged in.

So how do I turn the feature on?

Firstly, go to More, located at the far right of your personal page.

Then tap on Privacy Shortcuts.. Click on More Settings, and you should see Face Recognition.

You should see the label โ€˜Do you want Facebook to be able to recognize you in photos and videos?โ€™. Tap it, and select Yes if you want to let it recognize you. Naturally, select the other if you donโ€™t.

But donโ€™t worry if you change your mind later on. You can switch the setting on or off at any time.

Facebook, however, added a disclaimer at the end, professing that the feature might not be available to everyone. Yet.
