Many of us receive messages from all sorts of platforms including Telegram, Instagram, or even scam calls from “government authorities”.
While some people, unfortunately, fall prey to such scams, others use it to troll the scammers and entertain them in boredom.
Or some people may even use it to raise public awareness, like the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
Hilarious Video of Fake ICA Officer Scamming a Real ICA Officer Went Viral
You can either say the scammer is “lucky” for encountering someone that he is posing as or unlucky because the scam would never work.
The video started with Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Kelvin Teo, receiving a voice message from “ICA” and wanting him to press “5” to be redirected to the “customer service officer”.
A man then responded to his call and asked for his name. Mr Kelvin then said that his name was Mr Dong Bee Lee.
“Record shows your passport got error, so you cannot use passport anymore,” said the man on the line.
Mr Teo then said, “Oh no, what should I do now?”
It would be a pity if Mr Teo was not selected for the Oscar Awards.
When asked for his NRIC number, Mr Teo brought up the question of why the man did not have his particulars if he was from ICA.
The man asked for his NRIC number again.
Mr Teo, exposing his identity, responded “I am also an ICA officer working at the headquarters. We will never ask for personal details. That’s why I don’t believe you!”
The man was too stunned to speak.
ICA Urged Members of the Public to Be Wary
It turns out that members of the public have received calls from scammers, claiming that there were issues with their passport, NRIC, or Student pass.
ICA has listed out some tell-tale signs, or red flags, that indicate a scam.
A total of 14,349 scam cases was reported this year, almost double from last year.
Thank you Mr Teo for exposing such scam tactics— or should I say, Mr Dong Bee Lee?
