Father-Son Relationship Shattered over $400,000 HDB Flat Ownership Dispute in Yishun

A 47-year father-son relationship has been severed over property disputes.

Despite living under the same roof, the son has installed electronic locks and surveillance cameras on his room door while accusing his father of neglecting the family.

Meanwhile, the father claims his son has turned their flat into a “garbage house” to prevent him from renting or selling it. The two now live as strangers.

Ownership Dispute Leads to Family Breakdown

75-year-old Zhuo Jianding (name transliterated from Mandarin), a delivery worker, told reporters that he and his second son Zhuo Jinshun (name transliterated from Mandarin), 47, also a delivery worker, live together in an HDB flat at Block 636 Yishun Street 61.

They’re now locked in a bitter dispute over the sale of the property.

Zhuo Jianding explained that he and his wife jointly purchased the four-room flat years ago. The property was transferred before his wife’s death, and now both father and son jointly own it.

According to elder Zhuo, his wife passed away more than 20 years ago. He now wants to sell the flat to fund his retirement but faces strong opposition from his son, who has repeatedly created obstacles.

“He’s made the house dirty and messy. Dog waste cleaning tissues pile up in the kitchen, just to prevent me from renting or selling the flat. He also says he won’t sign any papers and will wait for me to die,” said the elder Zhuo.

Son Claims Mother’s Legacy

The son, Zhuo Jinshun disputed his father’s account, stating that the flat was purchased through his mother’s hard work.

With an older brother and younger siblings, he hopes to preserve the family home.

“My mother was a factory worker who bought this place so her children would have a home. He [referring to his father] never contributed a cent. If he can prove he paid any money, I’ll buy out his share or agree to sell the flat,” said Zhuo Jinshun.

He also accused his father of failing to fulfil family responsibilities when he was younger and even alleged domestic violence against his mother, which is why he refuses to sell the flat for his father’s profit.

“He was lazy and never worked to support the family. Now that the flat is valued at over $400,000, he’s trying to cash in. I’m currently paying all the utilities. This flat should be kept for my brothers and sister,” Zhuo Jinshun stated.

Zhuo Jinshun admitted to deliberately making the flat messy to prevent his father from renting or selling it.

Though they live together, the pair barely communicate. The elder Zhuo said arguments break out whenever they speak.

Their bedrooms are separated by just one wall. Zhuo Jinshun has installed an electronic lock on his door with a surveillance camera.

“He once broke into my room when I wasn’t home and stole gold jewellery my mother left behind to sell it. That’s why I installed the lock and camera outside my door,” explained Zhuo Jinshun.
