Being a cabin crew is a tough job, you would have to deal with the inevitable jetlag, flying at an ungodly hour and not to mention, put up with passengers by plastering a smile on your face—god bless your soul if it’s a long-haul flight.
All these will inevitably compromise your immunity.
Imagine, experiencing winter and summer in a span of 48 hours?
But sometimes, my SIA cabin crew friends regret taking MCs coz’ it will affect their appraisal.
But that is soon to change.
Restructuring of the system
According to The Straits Times, SIA cabin crew will not have their incentive points docked when they take sick leave for common illness—such as coughs and cold—and it will take effect from April.
An SIA spokesperson mentioned that the changes aim to “more accurately reflect their (cabin crew) performance”.
What is wrong with the current system
So, each cabin crew will start off with 10 incentive points a year, which can be deducted progressively or all at once when 12 casual MCs are collected.
In this case, a MC is considered casual when it is submitted for common ailments.
This will make cabin crew think twice if they want to take MC, even if they are legit ill as the MC component makes up 4-6% of the yearly appraisal.
This issue has always been buzzing beneath the surface for many years till last year, February when a stewardess was found dead in her hotel room in San Franciso.
The change has been applauded
When the aforementioned incident came to light, a MOM spokesman mentioned that employers should avoid penalising an employee just based on their sick leave.
Human Resource expert, David Leong from PeopleWorldwide Consulting said that SIA’s decision to restructure its appraisal system for cabin crew is a good move.
“Companies which do not outrightly say so but look less favourably on staff who take MC… see people as arid and mechanical assets. Such practices will not endear employees to the organisations,” he added.
Thoughts
People are bound to abuse their sick leave, but this restructure would enable the cabin crew to be subjected to a fair appraisal that is not rigged.
