How far would you go to thank your food delivery rider?

As it appears, far enough to label him an unsung hero when he tagged behind a mobile column for 10 minutes while basking in the cheers.

That was what Foodpanda delivery rider, Abdul Rahman, received when he suddenly decided he wants in on the limelight.

Although, as we understand from his interview with Straits Times, not all of it was intentionally planned like the Mr Bean reenactment.

He Was On His Way To Fulfill An Order

First thing first, what he did.

On 9 Aug 2020, when the mobile column passed through Woodlands Ave 3, the crowd of onlookers were treated to the refreshing sight of a Foodpanda rider following the column.

Reader Bao: Wait, is he a part of the column?

Reader Bao Jr: I don’t know, daddy, but this is cool.

Reader Bao: *Shrugs* WOOHOOO! FOODPANDA!

Yeah, you get the idea.

As it turns out, he didn’t skulk around at the entrance to Woodlands Ave 3 and waited to join the column.

He was on his way to pick up an order at the nearby Esso station.

His only way to reach the station is to use Woodlands Ave 3, he said, the road which the mobile column is travelling on.

The roads that the mobile column was travelling on are closed whenever they are coming through and open again after they’ve passed.

So he decided to tag along after the mobile column for 10 minutes, waving to the crowd as he passed by.

Best Birthday Present Ever

Mr Rahman proclaimed the cheers he received, as well as the positive online comments, as the best birthday present ever.

His birthday is on 8 Aug, and his wife had celebrated his special day with a cake when he reached home for lunch at 1pm. Shortly after at 3pm, he had to go back to work.

To top it off, his four-year-old saw the video and was very proud of him.

“He told our neighbours: ‘My daddy is in the National Day parade.'”

Delivering Food Is No Easy Business

Mr Rahman wasn’t always in the food delivery business.

Previously, he was an auxiliary police officer but decided to leave because he doesn’t want to do night shifts anymore.

Since then, to support his family, he works up to 9 hours per day for six days a week.

And it’s tough work:

“Food delivery is not an easy job. We have to travel through rain and heat, and deal with traffic also. I would say it is a high-risk occupation.”

He added that delivery riders are “part of the front liners” and should be appreciated.

Again, he is thankful for all the positive responses online.

The next time you order food delivery services, you might want to give them a small tip to show your appreciation.

No, you don’t have to tip $10, even $1 would make their day.

That and also know that just as negative comments will spoil someone’s day, a positive one will make someone happy too.
