Iconic Giant in Parkway Parade to Be Closing; Last Day on 29 Feb

What’s shocking about this closure is that there was no announcement by Giant or Parkway Parade.

A few patrons noticed a sign at the entrance that informed customers that the supermarket would be closing on 29 February.

Facebook user Ivy Chan uploaded the notice.

The notice says “Dear valued customers of Giant, it is with great regret that to announce the closure of the Parkway Parade store on 29 February 2020”. They also apologized for the closure and listed some of their other outlets for customers to shop at:

  • Giant Tampines WRS
  • Giant Suntec City
  • Giant Paya Lebar Square

Chan also posted pictures of empty shelves, possibly because of the ‘panic buying’ after the Covid-19 outbreak.

Even the alcohol was wiped out. Nothing eases fears like beers, right?

As one blogger said, Giant Parkway Parade has been operational for quite a long time, and given its popularity, this move will certainly come as a surprise.

Since Parkway Parade has not spoken about the closure, there is no news as to who will take over the space.

But given that the supermarket occupies half of the 5th floor of the mall, another organisation will probably replace the popular supermarket at some point.

Other stores to shop at after 29 Feb

Now, if you do your grocery shopping at Giant Parkway Parade and have no idea where to go after 29 Feb, you could shop at Cold Storage at the same mall or NTUC finest at Marine Parade Central.

Yes, they’re both a bit pricier, but that’s life, dear reader.

Last year, when Giant announced the closure of their VivoCity outlet, they explained that it reviews its portfolio of existing stores regularly as part of a “business rationalisation process” to ensure it “maximises business efficiencies”.

This includes closing and opening new stores, “depending on factors such as performance, lease renewals (and) site potential”, it said.

At any rate, it’s time to say goodbye to your favourite Giant outlet and make sure to do a grocery run before 29 Feb!
