This is a classic case of uninvited guests. So you’ve graciously decided to treat your girlfriend’s mum to a birthday dinner. Little did you know, “let me treat your mum to dinner” apparently means “let me treat everyone you ever knew to dinner”.
This poor boyfriend probably should have checked his girlfriend’s dictionary before offering, because that happened to him.

The couple decided on a Japanese Omakase restaurant, where no menus are available, and the chef serves whatever he feels like. As the chef is usually an accomplished one, the prices for these restaurants are not to be taken lightly.
The guy must have thought it was still acceptable to treat the mum (and probably the girlfriend too).
Unfortunately, slightly more than two people showed up. The mum’s brother showed up, his wife showed up, their kids showed up, and the mum’s friends showed up as well. With a total number of 8 adults and 2 children, the final bill amounted to roughly 2,200 SGD.
(This was in Taiwan, so the price looked even scarier, at 45,600 NT. Whew!)
At the end of the meal, the boyfriend was definitely not going to foot the bill, and fortunately, the mum’s brother noticed, and decided to pay first.
At this point, the story got a little confusing. The boyfriend still wanted to treat as he didn’t want to “lose face”. But when the girlfriend passed about 35,000 NT to the uncle in the boyfriend’s name, the dude got real mad and even slapped her.
Violence is always uncalled for, but in this case, it seems slightly understandable, considering the girl’s family just kind of screwed him over (even though he didn’t pay in the end).
As expected, netizens got angry, as they usually do for these things. Most got angry at the girl for not thinking about the guy at all, or not taking his financial ability into account, or allowing so many people to come when the original agreement was the mum only.

Others, of course, mentioned that the guy shouldn’t have slapped the girl, but damn if this wasn’t infuriating.
It’s not cool to take advantage of a guy (or a girl) like that.
