Despite having travelled all over Thailand while I was on my backpacking trip, I never really had the chance to stay in Bangkok for an extended period of time.
It might have something to do with the fact that I actually prefer trekking in forests and diving into the oceans.
(This is probably taken in Thailand. Chang island I think? …I should really get to organizing my images folder)
Anyway, I’ll probably be taking a couple of days off work just to go visit Bangkok. But just as I was googling for things to do in Bangkok, this piece of news from thenewpaper came up in my search results.
“Bangkok smog hits dangerous levels, kids asked to stay indoors”.
Well, there goes my plans. Normally, I wouldn’t be deterred by something like this, but I really, really don’t want my cough to start acting up again. (Try coughing for 3 weeks straight and you’ll probably get what I mean)
Anyway, the Pollution Control Department in Thailand said that the PM2.5 dust in Bangkok metropolitan area was measured at 72-95 micrograms per cubic metre of air.
“Dust is likely to increase in all areas,” the Pollution Control Department said.
PM2.5 refers to atmospheric particulate matter(chim-ology, I know) that has a diameter less than 2.5 micrometres. Just so you know, that’s about 3% the diameter of a human hair.
We’re talking about things like soot, dirt and smoke. Inhale enough of them and you just might win yourself a trip to the hospital.
The Air Quality Index(AQI) in central Bangkok was measured to be 135 AQI yesterday, which was at the “unhealthy” level.
Because of the dangers the smog posed to the human body, some schools in Thailand were even closed while others kept the children indoors.
If this sounds familiar to you, it’s because it is. Remember how Singapore has to monitor our air quality every year because of…uh, external reasons? Yeah, it’s something like that.
Man, I really hope that this will blow over soon. Travelling to Bangkok or not, it’s still disheartening to see the damages we have done to the environment. At the end of the day, our actions are just going to come back to haunt us.
