When food delivery services were first announced in Singapore, older-generation locals were understandably sceptical.

“Hmph, a bunch of lazy asses,” my Great Uncle Han Sup once snorted. “They would rather blow extra money on convenience than walk for five minutes to get food. I des-PISE.”

And yet, in an ironic twist of fate, food delivery services have somehow become Singapore’s saving grace…

For consumers and eateries alike.

Indeed, with the emergence of the dreaded Covid-19 outbreak and the subsequent Circuit Breaker Extended Edition, local food delivery services have become a safe passage of sorts for home-stuck consumers and business-affected restaurants.

And with the additional bonus of contact-less delivery, that notion has just been upped yet another notch.

Safe at home with restaurant-quality food. Bliss. As my Great Uncle Han Sup now proclaims:

“I’ve always known that these darn food delivery services will come to good use! I knew it!”

And with the introductory paragraph in mind, I now present to you Singapore’s newest pride and joy:

Google Pay’s Food Delivery option!

Yes folks, the iconic capital letter G has joined the food delivery party to send great-tasting food to your doorstep!

According to CNA LifestyleGoogle has launched the all-new food-related feature on its Google Pay Singapore platform, in a bid to help users unearth new food pick-up and delivery options.

Developed specially for the Singapore market, the free menu discovery feature currently lists more than 250 coffee shops, restaurants and hawker stalls.

Options include Kok Sen, O Banh Mi and Outram Park Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha; users can also choose to get restaurant-styled meals at home from the likes of Blue Ginger, O.BBa JJajang and NUDE Seafood.

The order and payment system will be similar to most delivery services: users are able to browse menus, pick items and then order and pay through the platform.

Self-collection and delivery options will be available.

According to Patrick Teo, director of engineering for payments and engineering site lead at Google Singapore, the objective of the feature is to simplify the discovery of local eateries and aid their cause.

“We hope to make the process of discovering local eateries simple and easy, and support even the smallest businesses – like hawkers – and minimise disruptions to their business,” he said.
