Everything to Know About the GTA-Style Car Incident Whereby The Driver Was Found With Police Cameras

It’s not often that a car knocks down an officer on the streets of Singapore, which is why the GTA Saga has caused quite a stir online.

Videos that were uploaded online on Thursday (28 Oct) showed a Mitsubishi Lancer trying to flee from two Traffic Police (TP) officers and slamming into one of them in the process.

Another video showed a man struggling with officers and shouting fiercely at one of them, leading many netizens to speculate that he was the one behind the wheel.

But this was not the case at all. In fact, the driver successfully evaded the police at first.

What Happened

Yesterday (29 October), the police held a press conference to explain what happened.

At around 9:50am that day, Station Inspector (SI) Abdul Hakim, a TP officer, was patrolling an area near Upper Paya Lebar Road.

He signalled for the driver of a Lancer to stop his vehicle by the roadside for a check, but instead of following orders, the driver sped off.

Mistake number 1.

Consequently, SI Hakim and other TP officers gave chase all the way to Geylang East Avenue 1, where the Lancer’s path was blocked off by another vehicle ahead of it.

SI Hakim managed to move ahead and stop the car, but then the driver pulled out an Uno Reverse card and reversed rapidly into another officer, Senior Staff Sergeant (SSSgt) Haidil Osman, who was on his bike, in an attempt to flee the scene.

Mistake number 2.

SSSgt Haidil was knocked down and hurt as a result. Despite that, he got up and tried to move ahead of the Lancer to prevent the driver from colliding into other vehicles, as well as a pedestrian who was crossing the road.

The officer later said that the Lancer driver was acting suspiciously right from the start.

“Initially, (the Lancer driver) was moving fast but when I reached him, he slowed down. So there were some tell-tale signs, which showed me he was behaving suspiciously.

“Once he sped off, I knew from my instinct that he was trying to escape the police.”

Driver Found With Help of Police Cameras

After getting knocked down and trying to intercept the vehicle, SSSgt Haidil gave the thumbs-up to his colleague SI Hakim, and told him to continue the pursuit.

When officers located the car, they found it empty and abandoned along Geylang East Central; the driver had escaped, but, oddly enough, they found the passenger – a 34-year-old man – standing outside the car.

He had to be restrained after allegedly raising his voice at the officers and pushing them. He was eventually arrested for using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty and suspected drug-related offences.

This means that the guy struggling with officers in the video was the passenger.

As for the driver, police officers launched a manhunt and eventually managed to locate him with the help of police cameras and video analytics mere hours after the incident along Yishun Street 51. He too was arrested.

Another Singaporean man who had rented the car was also arrested that day. The 22-year-old is accused of allowing the driver to use the hired car without a valid licence.

SSSgt Haidil sustained cuts on his hands and bruises on his legs and wrist, but he, fortunately, did not suffer any serious injuries.

If you want to evade the cops, do it on a gaming console. You don’t hurt anyone, and there’s a lot less jail time and fines that way.
