Have you ever been in an argument with a friend and to prove your point, you decided to do what you think was right? You weren’t sure if it was gonna work but by the power of sheer dumb luck, you proved your friend right and surprised even yourself. Makes for a nice I told you so moment, although in the back of your mind, you’re thanking your lucky star.
Well, an Indian minister was not as lucky.
In a bid to prove how clean a river was despite being polluted, he drank the “holy water” from it and promptly fell sick, and was then admitted to the hospital.
I told you so.
Indian Minister Drinks from Holy River
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann traveled to Kali Bein, a holy river in Sultanpur Lodhi, on 17 Jul 2022 to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the cleaning of the river. While there, Mr Bhagwant announced a statewide campaign to clean up the rivers and drains in the state.
The Government of Punjab released an official photo of the minister enjoying the river water as a way to prove it was safe for consumption.
A video also shows Mr Bhagwant scooping a glass of water from the holy river and downing it confidently.
Falling Sick and Airlifted to Hospital
He did not display any adverse effects right away, but a twist was around the corner two days later.
The Indian Express reported that on 19 Jul 2022, Mr Bhagwant started experiencing a severe stomachache at his residence in Chandigarh. Probably sensing the irony in the situation, he was airlifted to a hospital in Delhi and news of his illness was kept under wraps. He was rushed for emergency treatment without all of his security staff.
The Chief Minister’s Office did not confirm his hospitalization, with an official even saying that Mr Bhagwant was indeed healthy, with a packed schedule ahead of him. Unsurprisingly, sources then claimed that his ailment had to do with the water he drank from Kali Bein.
Thankfully for Mr Bhagwant, he was only out for a bit. On 21 Jul 2022, it was reported that the minister had been discharged. The report also states that doctors diagnosed Mr Bhagwant with an infection, and had stayed in a private ward with a team of the best medical experts and remained in a stable condition throughout.
